Right ladies and gents, a little bit of cricket bat history (or Norb porn!)
Some people may not care (tough!). I thought i would put this up for people to see what i think may be amongst the very first bats made with no splice, a real Jon newbery bit of innovation!!!!
I managed to pick this bat up with original leather cover - which is always a nice touch!
The Hi-Tech bat is spliceless and must be at least 15 years old, but possibly up to 33 years old - how do i know this, well it's a mike gatting 5 star - so it must have come out somewhere through his cricketing days!
Anyway - just thought i would post this up here as it's a pretty unique bat and considering all the hype about 'spliceless' bats nowadays, i thought wouldnt it be nice to see one of the originals! The bat, whilst a bit dirty looking, has 10 straight grains and still hits the mallet nicely!
Good work Mr.Newbery - by the way, the shape of the bat is still popular today (you can see mr.newbery has influenced the likes of tim keeley and julian millichamp - and rightly so!)
Enjoy the pics and a little bit of bat history!

Such a nice profile! great innovation!
-
So how's it done?
-
C'mon Dom, roll up the grip and unwind the binding.
-
Dom, I'd suggest older than 15 years. Gatting used GM for the latter part of his career.
-
Bat was made between 1984-1985 - confirmation from Talisman via mr.keeley - so 25-26 years young this year, the bats older than i am for gods sake!
Pics of the handle to follow.....
-
Dont want to take the grip off as it looks like the original - have to keep it on for posterity's sake!
It was an early version of the C6 handle - similar principle i believe, but this had a rubber outer-layer, around a cane (i assume it's cane) rod that goes into the blade. Im guessing the white tape is purely so that a grip would grip to the handle.

That bats as old as I am.... Better looking tho!
-
So it is spliceless in the same way the C6+ is, the hole in the top of the blade with the handle glueing into this.
-
A thing of beauty that Dom
-
Liam - i believe the principal would be the same, though the materials, quality and performance has improved since the time of this bat (at least i would like to think so anyway!)
Got it a car boot sale for £2 - thats one of the most satisfying things about it!
-
A classic for £2! Am going to head to my local car boot in search of a dynadrive next weekend :)
-
What a bargain!! £2.00 !!! Hell i was gonna think you had paid a couple of hundred notes for it from someone!! And i guess it is made By Mr Newbery himself seems like you got ta bat made by the guy who most people want a bat made by!!!
-
I think we should start a campaign to get Newbery to do a limited edition run of bats with old school stickers
-
I know what you mean - i like the old school orange and black together and i like the old crest as well (i dont like the new N logo that they are using at the moment)
-
2 quid? bargain! still usable i bet :D
-
I want it!!!!!
-
You cant handle it!
-
You cant handle it!
enough of the rubbish jokes and sell it to me
-
i thought it was hilarious, now you have offended me and the price has doubled, i want at least £4 now, without postage!!!!!
-
hmmmmm that is a bit steep I'll haggle over pm whislt people ponder over the wonder that is John Newbery
-
SS - you could be on for a nice little earner here...
-
it's more it's sentimental value to those who like to see and own a bit of cricket history than it's value - probably worth very little to be honest.
-
....exactly, but you could probably milk Andy for more than you paid!
-
ill give you 4 quid and the promise that i will use it in a game :)
-
SS, I would try and get a SAF Custom.. in a swap deal... ;)
-
i'm sure that wherever this bat is headed it will be well looked after :)
-
i'm sure that wherever this bat is headed it will be well looked after :)

-
i dont do cryptic or nice :)
Plenty of offers - houses, cars, wives, even money offered by some, but none accepted or likely to be im afraid - it's a look but dont touch item :)

I thought the GM Galaxy from 1981 was a spliceless bat.
-
Never heard of it Morty, got any more details?
-
The Galaxy had a sticker that was black at the top with the traditional Gunn and Moore green and blue underneath. It had a carbon handle but not sure if it was spliceless.
-
I've got a GM advert from a 1981 issue of WCM. It shows a picture of the bat, and it does not appear to have a splice.
Also, the from the description of the handle, a glass fibre core, then a layer of "shock absorbent matrix" and finally "hyper-sprung extruded polyastra"; doesn't look as though it could be shaped into a traditional spliced handle shape.
-
I believe that the handle concept was abandoned as the handle kept snapping out of the shoulders.
-
Anyone got a Newbery Excalibur shoulderless bat as use by big Lance Cairns when he hit a one handed 6 at the MCG in 1983?
-

I'd put it between 1983 and 1986; that was the period that Gatting used Newbery bats. When the original Newbery company went bust, he switched to G&M for the 86-7 tour of Australia he led, and for the rest of his career.
-
1984-1985 to be exact :)
-
Bat was deffo pre 1986 and if I had to put a date on it, I would go for 1984.
I'm not sure "Fat Gatt" went to GM because Newbery went bust, I thought ge got a big contract when he got the captaincy but I could be wrong.
This was before he tried to lay his long handle in the chamber maid in that Nottingham hotel that cost him the top job
-
Tim at Newbery said these bats were made between 1984-1985, so good guestimates all round!
