Title: CB40 final Warwickshire vs Somerset
Post by: Ayrtek Cricket on September 18, 2010, 12:28:17 PM
Right as im sat on my (No Swearing Please) for the majority of the day and going to watch the final in a bit thought i would satrt a lil topic so we can all have a guestimate of the scores etc....closest person wins!

To keep it interesting think we should all have a guess at the 1st innings score and loss of wickets... ??? obviously we dont know whos batting 1st yet but thats where uv got to stick ur neck on the line ;)

i hope Somerset get some silverware this year, narrowly missing out in the t20 and county championship.

1st Innings score: 216-8

that's what i think.
just hope that's what warks score :)

I feel Trott and Bell won't trouble the scorers too much, gut instinct.
But I think Barker will have a good knock.

Ayrtek, i'm guessing ur supporting Warks for this match.

if compton and hildreth stay in the middle til over 30 and continue scoring at this rate,
with jos buttler next in they can get a very respectable score.

this kind of reminds me of a match Somerset played against Essex either last year or the year before.
with the tail trying to bat out the overs.

Missing most of the wickets, air show going on a mile or so from my house. Vulcan Bomber, Tornado, F-14, A-380 and some other planes I don't know but they're not your everyday planes.

Disappointed by Somerset's batting performance, credit to Bell and Warwickshire though.

I think that this game is now dependant on Bell!!
He is the key! If he puts in a Captain's innings, then job done!
But if Bell goes soon, then it will be a tense time for the batsmen!!

If I were a somerset fan, I would actually blame the captain!!
As soon as he put on the pie chucker (turner) i laughed and thought "game over"!!!
I would have kept better bowlers in and hope that another wicket goes down!!

Turner must keep cr@p, which he should do bowling like that. But it means that thomas is under immense pressure.

And bell-end had better bat like that for england too!!

Somerset are the best cricket team in the country, consistent in every format and seriously unlucky not to have won at least 2 out of 3. Some teams could go backwards after a season like this one but I hope that with Kirby signed and a couple more fast bowling additions we will take that last small step forwards and win the championship next season. We seriously missed Zander in the final as Turner had already been released and I feel he would have added at least 25 to our batting total and reduced Warwickshire's by the same replacing Turner.

Went to the game yesterday and had a great day and to see Lords under lights for the first time was brilliant.

Disagree on the " best team" and "luck" theory though.

2020 Final - yea agree that luck did play a part with Pollard getting injured.

Championship - The best team always wins the league. Over the season somerset have just been missing something. I think Trescothic as a captain is a bit negative. The game against Kent comes to mind when he would not agree a run chase with Rob Key and settled to bat and get max batting points. He would not take the gamble of setting a run chase and they ended up with a draw.

Pro 40 - Outplayed by a better team. Somersets big players failed in a final again. Bell was a different class. I never really like him as a player but watching him live yesterday has totally changed my view. It looked like an effortless hundred. Again Trescothic failed as a captain, played a crap shot to get out and then bowling out Kartik was a mistake I thought he should have bowled one of the last two overs. It was obvious that Bell was not going to take any risks against him. Why Turner bowled the second last over I don't know.

To miss out on all three competitions is going to be hard to take but I would hope that the Somerset team and Management are not putting it down to luck. They were just missing that killer instinct that is required to win trophies.

Perhaps a change in management is required. To have a head coach with no first class cricket experience could be where the team are lacking. You need someone who has been there and done it. Langer would be my choice as coach if he wanted it.

My view anyway !!

Interesting that you don't agree with the "best team" tag Kieron, who would you say were the best team in the country this year?

Also interested in how you find being in 2 finals and finishing level on points with the championship winners an effort of a team that are lacking. Considering the revenue that Somerset generate and the amount they can spend on players I think the squad have been superb and Andy has managed them very well. Being written off as a coach for not having first class experience is a bit of a sweeping statement, also it is well known that some players responded very well to his and Langer's running of the team, Trego for example. Others hated it and even left the county, what a difference Blackwell could have made if he stayed, 2 championships to show for his move away from Langer.

Yea I know what you are saying but at the end of the day its trophies that count. I'm sure all the Somerset team would trade the "best team" tag for a trophy. The best teams are the teams that have won the trophies this year.

Yes, I think they are lacking and I'm guessing the Management feel the same way. That is why they have gone and signed Kirby (not that I think he is the answer) and i think they will be in the market for some more players. This season will have taken alot out of the current squad and it will need freshening up for sure.

As for the Coach, no doubt he is a good at something but when Langer was there he ran the show and now I understand Rose does the same. I also know that Langer had certain views on how the game should be played and certainly blackwell did not fit into that (but he has some trophies now) and neither did my mate Spurway. I just wonder where the players go for advise. Just through talking to ex players I've been told that its not the coach !! if someone is struggling with the bat or the ball they need to speak to someone who has been there and done it. That could be the difference at that level.

Something must be missing to miss out 3 times. Even Trescothic admitted that in his post match interview.

They have a very very good team but it just needs that final piece of the jigsaw to make them go down as the best.

I don't know, what do you think ? would you change anything ?

There's a difference between being the best all-round team and a team which wins a trophy/trophies.
In an ideal world they would both be the same team, but they're not.
Life's like that!

Actually I am a Hampshire fan, but I do admit that Somerset have been the best allround team this year.
They were unlucky with the T20 and Champ league, as they were level on runs and level on points on these occasions!
The 40 over final was just unfortunate that they had one or two key players missing who probably would have made a big difference to the run count! The bowling (Turner not included!) is some of the best in County cricket this year, the batting has been strong all year. But the only bad thing about Somerset seems to be a few bad decisions taken at the wrong times...such as letting Turner bowl the 38th over!
But even though Hampshire have some very class batsmen such as Adams, Carberry, etc! I must admit that Somerset have the Strongest team allround (taking all formats)
Still think Adams has been maybe the best batsman though!  ;)

I think that Somerset have been the best team in the country as they has proved themselves to be at the very top of all 3 formats, yes they won nothing but the margin between success and failure at the top is so small that regimes in sport have spent millions trying to find that last 1% gain.

I was lucky enough to talk to Sir Clive Woodward when he was at Southampton as he was renting a flat in the same block as my wife's parents and as a massive Rugby fan spoke to him about the foundations of a team, Rugby or Football as it was at the time. He made some very true observations about the first few steps being the biggest factors and the last few being the smallest but most vital. In competition most teams will have gone for the obvious and easy to implement steps, squad, leadership, management, training etc, but they all do this to a very similar formula. As I stated before I think that the fact that the county with low revenue and small finances takes on and beats most other counties is a lot to do with the last few small factors working well. Consider the amount that Hampshire, Nottinghamshire and Warwickshire have at their disposal for players, staff and facilities and you will see a big gap between them and Somerset.

I have a lot of time for Andy Hurry and think that his approach and background is working as a positive for the team. If players feel the bemoan the need to find a shoulder to cry on then maybe they are not cut out for the very top level of sport. If they need advice as to improve their game or merely to try something different then from what I hear he is a no nonsense kind of guy who deals in realities. He is as is Jason Kerr too a ECB 4 coach and that requires a level of knowledge beyond merely playing first class cricket. England are now spending more time assessing if a player has the mental capacity to fight the very best in an England shirt as much as if they possess the skills. Plenty have had the gifts but not the brain or steel to back them up under pressure, a mix is always needed.

I think that the signing of a 32 year old bowler does not get you going until you think that he will have the mental toughness and honed skill sets required to compete, if it is true that he harbours a desire to play for England and has moved down the road to get Div 1 cricket to force awareness then that is fantastic news for Somerset as I think we could benefit from sub International players being regulars, Trescothick, Kieswetter, Hildreth and Kirby could all be playing every game next season and with good quality solid Pro's such as De Bruyn, Thomas, Trego and Kartik in the side and some players trying to force themselves into these lists the progress that has been made over the past 4 years will continue. I hope that we don't forget that Hurry has been instrumental in making the side a lot more professional in its approach to fitness and the technical side of the game as well as coming up from the bottom divisions to the top of all 3 formats.

I think that they are the best overall and will have the strength to push further next season and win trophies to prove it. And luck always plays a part no matter what anyone says, we are human and make mistakes, some more than others, I'm sure no one is wishing for a title but the more you practice the luckier you get.......

He is the wandering cricketer that Flintoff aimed to be, his loyalty is down to the biggest cheque book, I would be surprised if someone else didn't up his salary next season.

Cricketers do the same job at any county, they play Cricket...If one County is offering more money than another, you'd naturally go.  Much like any other job, they want the best lifestyle possible.

Don't doubt Sarge's or Jason's coaching credentials. Both are top blokes, I have played against them both lots of times, and like you say are doing a great job. I'm just wondering wondering what will make them into winners. I'm sure once they win one trophy they could go on and win the lot although having lost all 3 its going to be a even bigger hurdle to get over next season.

Also heard a rumour from a very good source that Hampshire are trying to sign Hilldreth. Now that would be a disaster

Is Dockrell signing?, I hadn't heard that he has signed the contract that was offered.

Hampshire has not been a happy hunting ground for those looking to further their England claims, can't see that changing any time soon.

From the SCCC website

Losing skipper Trescothick admitted the season had been "pretty devastating" for his side after seeing them lose the Twenty20 final on the last delivery to Hampshire at the Rose Bowl last month before Nottinghamshire pipped them to the Division One title in the dying seconds of the campaign on Thursday.

"They are all gutted, as you can imagine," he said. "It's very tough to take, but we have to learn some lessons from what is happening. There is a reason why it happens.

"You only have to look at the two guys from Warwickshire; Imran Tahir getting five to take the heart out of the game then Ian Bell showing the world-class player he is.

"That's what you've got to do if you want to be the best, you have to show it at times. We've got to improve and try to emulate that."

then why is tahir going back to hampshire?

Apparently he had already signed up for the 2011 season with Hampshire before he signed this year for Warwickshire as apparently they interviewed Ashley Giles afterwards and this is what he said and they didn't have the option to extend his contract.
