Indian's are worth more as you can only have 4 overseas in your side.

Jimmy Anderson is unsold too...

Post by: petehosk on January 08, 2011, 11:42:44 AM
Anderson should have started his price at 200k really - then I reckon he would have sold!
He's a better bowler than a lot who have sold - but they seem to go for around 300k, so 400k starting price would be too high for most!! Start your price low and will get more initial interest - whereas if you start it high then people are put off!  Just like ebay really!!  ;)

If anyone bought him they would probably open up a Paypal Dispute as he's carrying an injury at the mo!

As long as they pay via paypal and not as a gift, they should be fine!  ;)

Watching the Indian news channels and the reserve price was a put off all the owners, coupled with he doesn't get into England's T 20 side

With regards to Gambhir, he went for $2m as he's the next Indian captain.

Key part of IPL is the word Indian. Doesn't matter if the Indian players aren't top draw, without them, theres no IPL.

Most teams want an Indian spinner, so their overseas players can be batsmen or fast bowlers.

I guess they think that Smith can bat, which they better hope as his bowling is a crock!
Unreal to think how they can pass the best spinner in the World for the last 2 years though!
Still - I guess as everyone says, they are after Indian players first and foremost!

His name wasn't on the list of players, surprising if he doesn't play, as he's a good draw card with his Indian roots
Title: Re: IPL Auction 2011

I thought all players were in the auction and retaining them is just that, that they retained them again. On the IPL website Warne is listed 8th on $1.8 million
Title: Re: IPL Auction 2011

Ok - the list we have is 353 players. It was originally 413, cut down to 350 with 4 more added after Kumble dropped out.

Isn't there 10 teams and each team has to have 5 indians but there were 48 only indian players in the auction with the rest being made up by unknown/uncapped indian cricketers. Hence why they have all sold for over the odds.

Harsha Boggle knows nothing (!!!)
I think the issue was that I said I wasn't prepared to go out on the smash every night as I wanted to go to the nets and work on my forward defence. It didn't go down well with Shilpa Shetty or Preity Zinta  :o

I agree in a way, but it stops one franchise from becoming dominant over a long period.

Plus, with 2 new teams they had to start more or less from scratch anyway

Title: Re: IPL Auction 2011
Post by: uknsaunders on January 09, 2011, 10:53:09 AM
to be fair Botha did ok in the T20 WC - 5.66 Economy and 4 wickets in (only) 3 games. Swann got 10 wickets with an economy of 6.54 - but at least he got someone out unlike Harby Singh - 0-123 in 20 overs, lovely.

It's a joke, designed to make very average Indian players rich and anyone who makes themselves available for the whole tournament.

Look on the bright side, Swanny goes back into the auction today and a few franchises who have missed out on their preferred picks may take him and Anderson.

I think if you held your nerve & waited at the auction, you'd get some really good overseas players for peanuts.

Michael Vaughan mentioned on his twitter about all the coaches being Australia or South African and hence those players were getting brought. You need English coaches to get English players playing apparantly.

I reckon the Colly retirement might of been a little pushed a bit by the IPL. Colly gets $250k for 2 years, possibly more than he would've got from playing test cricket. I'd wouldn't have put it past Warne to have tapped Colly up during the ashes - he was very nice about him at the end of the series :-)

No, reason is he was only free to play for 2 weeks

as I understand it, the auction price gets reduced according to the players availability anyway. ie. if Gayle is available 2 weeks out of 6 - his 400k for 2 years would be 200k for 1 year / 0.3 = 60k for 2011 (something like that).

The flipside of this is when he isn't around they need to find a suitable replacement - which is a pain in the (No Swearing Please) and hence why Franchises go for players available for 6 weeks, because it makes planning alot easier. That's why KP only fetched 650k as well.

Colly being available all 6 weeks probably got him the gig. Anderson's limited availability and Flowers threat to pull him out on a whim didn't help.

Still surprised that nobody took a punt on gayle, swann, anderson, wright.

I am surprised that all the franchised did not spend their full purse..... a while back they were asking BCCI/IPL governing council to allow them to increase their purse or retain more players....

The msot aggressive has been KKR in picking up their players......

Pune bagged 3 good players as well Robin Uthapa (highly talented and mightily ignored by BCCI), Yuvi amd Murali Karthik...

The mantra this time seems to be young, agile and talented

I think Chennai did the right thing in trying to retain as many of their old players as possible.....

alot of deals are done after the auction - so you might see the likes of Gayle/Anderson/Swann playing after all and I think that still comes out the purse.

Franchises have to sign 6 Indian's under the age of 22, so they can't blow their entire purse in the auction.

Players capped at full International level can't be sign outside the auction, unless they are replacements for injured or unavailable players.

Swann, Anderson and Wright gathered no interest as their base price was $400k, they should have taken the same route as Morgan(base price was $200k) and had a lower base price.

Overseas spinners don;t sell well barring Murali and Warne, both getting over $1m. Botha was a strange one, can't understand how he was more expensive than Vettori(arguably the best spinner in T20 cricket in terms of economy).

Van Der Merwe was sold for $50k
Suraj Randiv  was sold for $80k
Steve O'Keefe was sold for $20k
Steven Smith was sold for $200k

These guys where bargain buys.

Even Murali Kartik only went for $400k.

Yash, Uthappa is rubbish, he's been running his mouth for 3 years how he's one of the best players in India, yet he does little to show that. He thought he could be w/k and gave up. He opened the batting and gave up. The guy is a quitter.

Wasn't Dimitri Mascarenhas brought by Rajastan outside auction originally - he was capped in 2007. Cricinfo article:-

Uthappa was outstanding in 2010, did you watch the IPL last year?

Uthappa wasn't anything special. He was behind Raina, Vijay, Rohit and S Tiwary in the run charts. All these guys have leapfrogged him into the nation side.

Regarding Dimi, no English players entered the auction in 2008, so Dimi was purchased after the auction. Additionally Dimi wasn't a Test player, so it was easier to get him.

fair enough Jeet - I thought he was outstanding from the games I watched.

I'm not sure your thoughts on Dimitri made sense - he had ODI caps and was a full international. If memory serves me right he smacked 5 sixes in an over in an ODI at the Oval in 2007, so he'd of certainly have been a key England player at that point. However, things might of changed since then - we'll see if anyone pops up between now and the 8th April :-)

No what I meant was, if your an ODI/T20 player, boards are more likely to give permission outside the auction.

Regular Test players aren't usually given clearance outside the auction.

franchises can get permission to fill in replacement slots after the auction if someone they bought is not available....i believe mascarenhas was bought using that route

Had an argument with a friend yesterday over the most represented nation bar India, It's Australia, right?

easy way to work it out - count which nation has the most coaches. It'll probably be Australia - that's right the greatest T20 nation in world cricket after winning none of the last 3 world cups.

IPL isn't about logic I'm afraid.

Maybe because he's not in the England set up at the moment so he will be available to play the whole tournament? He played last year I think and did alright from what I remember.

But surely the reason he is out of the England side is because of his form. From memory didn't he have a reasonably poor county season?
