I'd have to argue that, I totally agree uni is expensive and I agree that I spent more time creating Neon than actually studying (albeit they were part of each other) but without my degree I wouldn't have my full time job right now - it does pay off, its just a big outlay at first

Agreed Uni isn't for everyone, but I certainly wouldn't tell anyone not to go if they could

Without working for free for 2 cricket bat manufacturers, I wouldn't have my job either... I also had the luxury of spending 5 years learning, travelling and eventually getting paid to follow the sport I love.

As I've said I think if this truly is someone's dream, then they will do all they can to make it happen. Whether that's taking a lowly paid job, as I did, or hassling a bat manufacturer until they let you come on board alongside your current job. It's a hard industry to get into, but there are opportunities - and for me this B3 one is a great one. Whoever gets it will have the good fortune of working alongside 2 of the most knowledgeable enthusiastic people in the industry.

To put I to context I was willing to throw in the towel with my 34k a year job and pension in 6 years of around 700 a month till I die and around 50k lump sum.

But then again I guess I'm what Tom is desecribing it would be my dream job and working with the guys would be no job at all but a pleasure.

They will not let me do it though which is a crying shame and I guess I have to be content with what I do with them already.

Shame really

Oh and relocate the family I feel I have something to offer the industry big time and feel I can make a
Massive contribution, I have studied watched learned so much and gone so far.

I do have massive respect for anyone that would be willing to give up their career for this chance, there isn't a doubt its a fantastic opportunity to learn and had I still been 16/17 and not sure of what way my career was heading I'd be snapping B3's hand off

Sadly I personally can't justify quitting a �40k job after putting the effort into Uni etc, I'll just have to learn the long and slow route (Which was always the plan to be fair!)

Could just be a ploy for cheap labour, needs saying as most employers abuse the system unless B3 are looking to fully educate some young bucks who would just leave and set up much as DB has done. I would not think you'd do much apart from the required manual labour.

You should look at this as a chance to be part of a bat making firm, rather than a bat maker.

I'm sure that B3 wouldn't be just after cheap labour. B3 are growing and are putting out quality products. You just have to look at the forums to see how highly people rate their bats, and the rush they are in to get them. So do your year/s of training then if you are any good you would be able to become a professional bat maker with a highly respected brand, and/or could take that experience and use it to get a job anywhere else in the industry. I'm sure you could still play cricket and there would be perks like free gear. If I was in the UK and not Australia I would b doing this in a heartbeat. I'd pay someone

to teach me how to do it on the weekends/after work. I know it would be hard financially but if you have some savings it would be doable. It would be worth the risk if your financial responsibilites weren't that high

I have the inside track into what the 2 new guys are going to be doing and potentially there future.

B3 have made a stir in the industry with forward thinking and offering something nobody else does.

We make mistakes no doubt but look to rectify and hope we have.

The guys who have got the gig will be taught traditional and modern techniques on bats something not everybody can offer.
