yep, seemed a good deal.  mike likes to take a few of the lower grade bats of tims hands at the same time, as it obviously unfair if he keeps taking the finest clefts.

back on topic - i don't consider newbery a big brand yet.  a big brand to me is one that is known throughout cricketing countries, mass produces equipment and is available in every single store you walk into.  newbery isn't quite there yet for me, which i consider a good thing as the quality may decline if they were to become this big.

I'd say that maybe Newbery and Bradbury, perhaps even Hunts County are on the edge of big brands probably medium sized. They're not the major players, but compared to Fusion or Redback they're large. sponsor a number of players and are sold in many retail outlets.

got to agree with you there, would also add salix and warsop to that list.
what do you reckon to laver and wood, renowned for quality handmade bats but does this qualify them as a big, medium or small sized brand? as their soft goods are rarely seen

Small, ask most at your club and they won't have heard of them. Same with Fusion and Redback.

However mention Newbery or Bradbury. Or like you say, Salix more will have. Then you get the largest ones, Slazenger etc and nearly all will have.

We can probably add M&H to the list of brands on the verge of becoming big brands.

The fact remains that, these brands will probably never find a foothold in the subcontinent markets and I believe they would never like to venture into the subcontinent marekts.

English bats will not survive / perform in the subcontinent given the kind of balls used there (much harder).

But if we exclude the subcontinent market (which is big in volumes thought) and brands like Kookaburra, Puma, Woodwoor (who do not make their own bats), then I would like definately think of Newbery as a big brand followed by Salix, M&H and Bradbury.

But in this worls where brands are evaluated on purely financial basis and recall.... I am afraid the above 3 lose out.

Which could mean to an extent that these brands are not "mass brands" but "niche brands" popular among more serious cricketers (if I may say so)..... looking for performance equipment rather than eyecatching labels....

(IN no way I am trying to convey that people using other brands are not serious about their cricket)

Some people at my club even in my mens team have no clue on brands and I think it is the half-hearted cricketer that stops the quality brands shining as they should do. These people literally know 5 or 6 brands- ie GM, GN, Slaz, Puma, Kook and Woodworm! With the exception of Woodworm though all these brands have proved that to make money you have to have money to sponsor big stars and have your bats stocked in all the shops.

All of them but Woodworm are part of another company in which they can source a cash backing from ie GM- Unicorn, Gray Nicolls- Grays Sports, Slazenger- Slazenger Dunlop, Puma- obviously source money from their football and fashion and Kookaburra also have a hockey make.

The likes of Newbery, Salix, Hunts County etc are only going to be right up there if they join a franchise or something so they have money to sponsor a couple of world class players. Woodworm went wrong by jumping in at the deep end spending money on Fred and later KP which they didn't really have.
