I was at Meulemans in Perth once when Gilly was collecting a batch of bats. Very casual about it. He'd pick up a bat, give it a few taps on the ground, couple of 'air shots' and pronounced it as 'good'  'balance not to his liking' 'weight not right' etc. Took him about 2 minutes to select 6 bats! He wasn't concerned with grain etc.

Did he take just Puma's? plus I wish I could do this, it takes me ages to pick a bat.

Tom - if Gilly's puma ever needs a new home, I'm more than willing to compensate you.

They all look nice, but none of them are anything we as lowely consumers can't or haven't had opportunity to buy.

Basically folks, those who owned them are better than we can ever hope to be, that's why they hit balls better than we do. Nowt to do with the bats. There is no such thing as a wonder bat.

I agree in principle. An amazing bat wont turn a mediocre player into a test player. I reckon it is 90% talent, 10% gear.

I think it'll be far nearer 99:1 split. I'd back a test level batsman with a kasmir plank to score more runs than anyone from here with any protastic ping plus bat.

In truth if you know you have a good bat then it breeds confidence thus mentally telling you your better so it no harm in thinking you have a wonder bat

Beachcricket - yes all Pumas, special stock delivered for him. I also used to go 'out the back' of the shop and rummage through boxes labeled 'Martyn' and 'Langer' made them sell me a sensational unlabeled bat from JL's stash back in the day.

Ofcourse whether a player is fussy or not often depends on their personality, Gilly (who was/is a freak of nature) is unfussy (one would assume he already knows bats picked for him are super) guys like Ponting and Hussey are super fussy which fits in with their ultra preparation type personalities. Of course, test batsmen are freaks and could do well with anything. Similarly some golf pro's are highly 'techie' others barely know what the specs of their driver is and use what their sponsoring rep fits them into.
