It's another (minimal) weight saving point. It also helps to create the bigger edge that is more desirable now.
It's not a big angle, it's a lovely shape to look at.

Is there any chance of you being able to put up some pics to show it better? It is one thing to see it on a diagram but another to see it in the flesh. Now I realise there is still a fair bit of edge before the area it is removed from, I wouldn't be so concerned about durability.

I have never ever seen a bat like their 'non salix shape' bat. I know what they mean, but I think they slightly exagerated the shape in the diagram. I'm sure actual pictures will put it in perspective though. I personally like the Praestantia

The non salix shape is a bit of a combination of recent trends - one is for a very flat face which emphasises the edges of the bat, the size of the edges and finally the concaving. (thanks to the person who answered this question for me
)
some of the slazenger bats look a bit like this, as do a few other indian made bats. It certainly isn't a traditional English cricket bat shape
this is the nearist I have a picture of for this shape

It is an extreme example for sure, but it illustrates the trend to make hugely concaved bats which end up with big edges and very little wood in the middle. The nice thing about Salix is they don't do the extreme concaving, it is fairly subtle.
