quality tools
« on: April 13, 2011, 12:16:24 PM »

Right, been searching around a bit for some fairly basic tools and these are what seemed reasonably priced and not too shabby quality. Most are on amazon as i've got free next day delivery and they've always been reliable for me in the past

Rasps http://www.amazon.co.uk/Silverline-MS104-3-piece-Rasp-Set/dp/B000LFTQVI/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1302695585&sr=8-1
Flat plane http://www.amazon.co.uk/Draper-19702-2-Piece-Combined-Plane/dp/B0001K9QQ8/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&s=diy&qid=1302695558&sr=1-1
Travishers http://www.gandmtools.co.uk/cat_leaf.php?id=1255
Drawknife http://www.amazon.co.uk/Flexcut-KN16-5-Draw-Knife/dp/B000ZRV5MK/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1302695433&sr=8-1
Flat spokeshave http://www.amazon.co.uk/Faithfull-FAISSFLAT-SSFLAT-Spokeshave-Flat/dp/B000C750E2/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1302696744&sr=8-1   round one also available
Clamp grips http://www.amazon.co.uk/Silverline-273221-Soft-Vice-Jaws/dp/B000LFTOL0/ref=pd_sim_diy_1

Clamp I can borrow from my school and can use a massive benc there too so they're not really needed.
Overall comes to about £110 + p&p

Ive never really done anything like this in the past so have no idea about if these are good quality or not so any thoughts from anyone who knows would be really hepful, please.  :D

Cheers,
James

Forget about rasps you won't need them as your shoulders will be as good as shaped for you to finish them use a spokeshave and or a drawknife

Ok best go for a 12" Drawknife older ones have better steel in them stay shaperer for long as well

Spokeshave go for an old cast iron one stanley, record

Also look for an old wooden plane [a bit lighter to use, so make sure it's isnt a heavy wood]

Smoothing plane and if you must a block plane.

Travishers - look for a convex spokeshave or a snell leather thingy people talk about.  those Gandmtools ones take a lot of setup and sharpening...

You need something to sharpen your tools with as well

Dyou mean one with a past record? most of the ones there seem either quite old or very new.

How old do you mean? this seems like an old plane (if we can believe the seller!) http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/VINTAGE-WOODEN-PLANE-100-YEARS-OLD-MARSHALL-GLASGOW-/180648709578?pt=UK_Collectable_ToolsHasdware_RL&hash=item2a0f808dca

So true, you've given me a project idea!

That's a nice plane but too big. You need a plane that's 9 inches or less really in my opinion, so long as the sole and the blade are in good condition.

Slightly smaller plane is proving hard to find - most are bigger or give no size. hmmmm just keep looking.

If anyone's selling one of the things that's mentioned on the thread btw then just post it up if that's ok  ;)

Look for a smoothing plane!
