We lost by 20 runs in a friendly today as Cawthorne. They got 171 and we got 151 but we were tucked up by the oppo big time. We play a couple of our Saturday guys and Sunday occasional cricketers and they turned up with half their 1st XI and half their 2nd XI. They also brought their Yorkshire U15 Opening bowler in to fill for a colt who hadn't turned up and he took 7-6 in 8 overs, with a little help from the 12th man which I'll come onto in a minute. Considering they are a top team in the Huddersfield League we did ok, Liam (prowannabee) turned out for us and batted really well for 33 before smacking a dirty great full toss to mid-on. I took 3-25 opening the bowling, Liam also took 1-20.
Our cause was not helped by some very biased home umpiring. They provided an umpire - which we paid for (as we found out at tea), who gave 2 shocking/extremely dubious LBW's to them and turned down 2 plum ones off us. Mine was a shocker - given out today hit on my back leg on middle/leg stick to a left arm over who bowled it half down the deck and didn't swing or seam it back in. It's nearly impossible for the ball to pitch on the stumps from that angle when it's that short. Made even worse by the same umpire not given a plumb lbw off me to a full yorker first ball of the game. Liam also had a plumb hitting all 3 turned down, but the same ump gave our number 4 out on the front foot, a foot out of his crease with a stride in to the same bowler as mine.
Very frustrating as we love playing there but see to cop some dubious decisions. 2 year ago we had a colt claim a catch when he was clearly over the boundary against one of our batters and we lost by 3 runs or so. Last year they resorted to bowler very wide of off stick and their ump didn't wide them and we again lost by 4 runs! Lovely ground though...
