I spotted that one on eBay too. There is a giveaway on the real ones so it's obvious they have the graphite or fibreglass backs. You can see it on mine.

I got a Bat from the same seller, it was really bably 'refurbed' but doing it myself it came up a realy Treat!

Having had a fairly fruitful time on eBay recently, I spotted something that peaked my interest. A Stuart Surridge 333 Turbo. Now there are a few of these around the place and they come up fairly frequently, however this one had some very unusual stickers. They say "Custom Made". You don't see that very often.

So I went in on the Buy It Now price. And bought it. And I am not disappointed. Why not?

Because this is one of those rarest of beasts. A Graham Gooch-style laminated Turbo 333 with a Lamitoe. Rare as that proverbial rocking horse doo dar and usually very expensive, it has turned out to be a bargain. Very pleased with myself for spotting it!

One more rarity to come. Pictures when I get it...

I'd love one of these too. It'd be way too heavy for me but I'd still like one. Very, very rare in Aus.

I have seen a couple of GM county's knocking about on selling sites. I think they are from the 1980s - would they be considered a bat worth having in a vintage collection, or a bit run of the mill?

Here is the second of what I like to consider my rarest finds. Why is it one of those? Well these don't come up that often. And when they do, they're not usually in great nick. Why are these so rare? That's thanks to a little bit of scrapping between two of the larger batmakers of the time. But first, here it is. A Slazenger V800, Mark I, or Cat's Eye, in excellent condition and weighiing in at 2lb 9.7oz.

Now, why the rarity? Well, this was down to the fact that Gray Nicolls had patents out on the Scoop and on multiple scoops, and they felt that this bat infringed on those patents and went after Slazenger. As a result it was around for about a season, before Slazenger redesigned the V800 to remove the wonderful cat's eyes and produce the much inferior slotted edge version, or Mark II.

This has long been a favourite of mine and thanks to Gray Nics has long been hard to find. Enjoy...!

I had one of them v800s back in the day. I cant remember what model it was but I know it wasn't the ultimate. I think it was around 1998 and (still cant believe I did this) I put it in cash generator for �12

So my new job means I go for a road trip to some corner of England once a month. This week I managed to pick up a couple of vintage bats on my travels. Not knowing much about old bats I would welcome opinions/info on what I picked up.

First up is this - advert was for a cover which apparently came with an old bat....

You can never have too many covers so I agreed to buy it and take a chance on the bat - and this is what was inside when I picked it up.

I have taken the tape and twine off to find the face wasn't too bad, but there have been some repairs to the toe that could do with a tidy up.

It is SH, weighs 2.8 and has 8 grains - taps up pretty well with a ball. As the face is already 2 different colours I plan to give it a light refurb/repair.

The second bat is this Stuart Surridge Neil Harvey Autograph 2 star which I believe dates from mid 1950s, as Surridge sponsored Harvey after he scored over 2000 runs in the 1953 Ashes tour of England. This was found in the sellers loft so they couldn't tell me much about it, and I can't find much info on line other than some notes on the Bonhams website when then sold a signed SS NH from the 1956 Ashes tour - their write up suggested the Aussie team commissioned some of these bats

The willow is in great shape for its age, and although I would like to clean it up think I should leave this one alone as it will either damage the branding or end up with a 2 tone face if I stay well clear of the writing.

One question - it doesn't have any markings to to suggest it was not an adult bat, but it only measures 32.75 inches long and weighs just 2.4lbs - so is this likely to be a Harrow or just a small men's - did they tend to use smaller bats back then?
