Jonno. . .give yourself a pat on the back mate. . .some wise words there. i think the same way. even though i dont act upon it by having 5 bats.

you have to feel comfortable with the bat though.

That is crazy. A cricket bat has one use, to hit a leather ball in a game of cricket. Due to the nature of their manufacture,they do get damaged, they do break and no, they won't last forever.

Although the bats you have are very nice, they are not rare or difficult to replace. They are production models, nothing more. If you'd comissioned LW to make you a bat and have it gold plated, I'd understand your reluctance.

I advise you to follow Pete Hosk's example. He has some of the most sought after bats in the world, but not only does he think nothing of using them himself, he is perfectly happy to loan them out to his friends.

There is absolutely no point in spending all the money you have done just for them to look pretty leaning against your bedroom wall.

If you want to be precious about something you collect, cricket bats are not the thing to do it with.

Being brutally honest, your choice of bat is not the vital element in your cricketing success.

Please, just go out and enjoy your cricket, forget about the bat. Pick one, put it in your kit bag and use it until it breaks. Assuming it will last a season, you have enough to last you for 20 odd years before you need to buy a new bat.

To add to this, the bat collecting I understand. I did it myself, I not longer agree with it, but I see the attraction. What I really don't get is having 9 pairs of pads. There is absolutely no point.

Save your money. Enjoy and use what you have.

I was offered it for a 'special' price. It's kashmir, and the gold plating is actually brass, but due to the LW stickers, it is worth every penny of the �10k asking price.

Hi CD, pls listen to this great piece of advice from Jon! You will enjoy your cricket so much more when you are successful on the field. When you are scoring runs you could be doing it with a plank and i'd bet that you'd rather use that plank than any other bat. If you use the same enthusiasm that you apply to buying bats and equipment to your cricket i have no doubt that you will reap the rewards!

I couldn't agree more with jon, the worst thing to do is to use a bat you dont fully trust. personally i only ever keep a maximum of 2 bats at any one time, 1 match bat and one back up in case anything happens. on previous occasions when i used other bats, namely my brothers (I have 4 brothers each with at least 3/4 bat, so plenty to choose from), i've been to pre-occupied by thinking about the bat rather than my batting.

as any batsmen will tell you concentration is a must when batting, a couple of Pakistani pros i met told me if you dont know your bat inside out, you are seriously handicapped. if i use a bat im not familiar with i would be hesitant to play certain shots as im not used to the subtle differences that are present between every bat, weight, pick up, size of middle etc. if i was to change my bat every couple of matches, i wouldn't get any consistency, one bat one season and maybe a different one in 20/20 and thats it.

but hey that is just me, and my opinion.

It does seem as though everyone is agreed that you should really only have your match bat plus a.n.other....

Perhaps the man who can best demonstrate this to us is SRT himself, who has used and fixed the same bat on umpteen occasions, because he scores runs with it and knows it inside out...

I remember Gilchrist and his wonder bat had a similar relationship here's what he said at the time, makes interesting reading :

"Gilchrist crashed his way to a famous 100 from 57 balls that day and knew the bat was something special.

"It's just the best bat I've ever had. We're spoilt for choice at this level, the sponsors look after us with quality bats, but this one in particular just felt great," Gilchrist said.

"I've really hung on to it and I've tried to sap every bit of life out of it."

Modern bats don't last that long, but Gilchrist has nursed the Wonder Bat as if it was an orphaned marsupial.

It has been glued and pinned and preserved at every turn. If staying up nights with a cold flannel and a bottle of milk would have done the trick, Gilchrist would have been there.

This is an interesting one.
I know my Instinct very well and love it to bits. I only use it in matches and am reluctant to use anything else unless I have had it for a long long while in nets.
However, I have used lots of other people's bats in nets, and some old bats, and I tend to find the middle of them quite easily after a couple of minutes. In the nets I am not that fussed, but in terms of match bat, I have one bat and one bat only until it breaks.
In then end a bat is there to be used, and it is willow, a natural material, so it will break. Thus I use one till it breaks, and when it does, despite me taking care of it well, that's fine.
Swapping bats in the middle is very hard to adjust to at times I find...

In answer to the original question. Yes

I hate using other people's bats firstly, but if I borrow a bat, how aggressive I am batting depends on the owner. If my best mate leant me his Hunts County I would play normally without a care, if our 2s skipper leant me his dad's GM Maxi Original, I would p[lay more carefully and try and middle more.

This might sound a bit silly , but that gray nicolls quantum i have has a very sqaure toe making me always playing straight its hard to play cross bat shots with the bat .
