Hi,
I bought this Academy size Vampire BAS kinghitter off Asad.Weighs around 2.9, with 9 grains.I must admit it is not what I thought it would look like.It doesn't have massive edges like other Asian bats and neither heavily concaved,But I love it.Lovely pick up and nice lowish middle.Found it quite compromising with off the middle shots as well.I bought it only because My SAF erus custom broke after two sessions of nets!.It was a lovely bat too with lowish middle 2.9 weight big edges.It was a principal willow which I haven't seen anybody post a review on.Andy has agreed on replacing it three weeks ago and that was it.Posted below are pictures of both bats.

Wow - that's a pretty spectacular break!! Oh well, these things happen, and as long as Andy is prepared to replace it then your ok

I am not sure a batmaker should be totally required to replace a two year old bat... normally one year is as good as can be offered.

i think he's used it for 2 sessions not seasons buzz

I need to work on my reading skills!! For a bat to break after two sessions is really dissapointing!!

You have to wonder, if two bats go like that, seemingly at the splice cut, whether they are both clefts from the same tree and whether that tree had in fact got a weakness in it.

It could be mate as the other bat that broke was no 146 and this is one is 156.Everyone at the nets liked it even our Aussie pro.

Splicing a bat means getting a small surface area to hold tight despite massive pressure on it, the way it works is that the splice is cut smaller than the handle, the force of the handle in the splice creates added strength to the bond. When it is slightly out for whatever reason the result is a big snap, remember that this is a bond between 2 organic and unpredictable pieces of wood so this will happen, I've had mine go the same way before too.

The alternative is to make the gap the same which will allow for no breaks like this but also gives a weaker handle and results in the masses of cracks along the line of bonding and through the shoulder as is common with many Asian bats. Then you see filler being used and the handle join is inferior for life span and performance wise.

You will be looked after by SAF, just focus on the point that everyone liked it, you can't say that very often with bats.

I thought when the bat breaks like it has shown in the photos here, there is a problem with willow.

Hi Mike, yes, I get that, you are forcing the handle into the gap and essentially causing the shoulder wood to displace slightly outwards with two lines of a stress radiating from the base of the splice out to the edges slightly below the base of the splice.

Just wondered that whether, if you had a cleft with a minor fault that caused that stress line to break, if you had more than one cleft from the same tree, at the same level in the willow, there's every possibility that they might go the same way!

The pictures clearly show it to be a splicing problem, I've seen plenty like this.

Tim, yes you get stress (wind damage) lines in bats caused by the tree moving laterally in high wind which are visible to the naked eye, but the break is running through the bottom of the splice which is the give away. I have a GN here with a near 360 degree crack running round the centre, I would take it back to them but as it is an old model they would never entertain the idea of replacing it despite the fact it was only used 6/8 times and looks like new. It is storm damage and is a cleft fault.

Got my replacement SAF from Andy last Saturday.As there was a mix up and thus taking nearly 8 weeks,Andy upgraded me to a Premium grade willow instead of principal and a different profile as asked. The bat is about 2.13 high spine ,lowish middle (though i needed it even lower) 11 grained beauty.Sounds promising with the mallet and the ball.
