So then, new captain and a soon to be announced new coaching team. Do we think this will prompt further changes to the England team, or will they just bumble along with the same team, just with different people in charge?
I think if Strauss and A N Other really want to stamp their mark on a new look England, then they need to make some changes to the playing personnel. Even if this is change for changes sake. I think I good way to put the recent dressing room rift behind them, is to have a shake up of who is in that dressing room.
So what do people think? Who should be out? Who should be in?
In order to start discussion here's some thoughts:
1. Strauss (C) - solid
2. Cook - would be good if he could score more hundreds, but a string of pretty 50's is still enough to keep his place.
3. We need someone new! I think pick the leading qualifed run scorer from the county championship that isn't deemed too old.
4. KP
5. Again, a position that needs filling. Again looking at stats Ravi Bopara scored a ton of runs for Essex last year (albeit div 2 runs) - for me he seems like an obvious candidate to succeed Collingwood
6. Flintoff
7. I think Matt Prior will always be associated with Peter Moores. I'd like to see him axed as keeper, though given his performance last year would happily see him in my 3 or 5 slots as a specialist batsman. In recent years I think Foster has been unlucky, as he was only ever dropped through injury and hasn't been given a chance since. What do people think of Nic Pothas? He scored plenty of runs last year?
8. Stuart Broad - I think he's still improving as a bowler, and adds very valuable runs down the order
9. Spinner spot - does Monty have what it takes? I think he does, but it needs to be coaxed out of him. Now could be a good test of his heart - how hard is he prepared to work? Otherwise, I like the look of Swann as a functional spinner who's far more likely to contribute with bat and in the field. Hopefully, though, this place is being kept warm for Adil Rashid. He's not ready yet, but hopefully if he shows good improvement over the next year he'll be able to step up and make a real differnece to the make up of the England team.
10 and 11. Who are are best 2 seamers? Would love Harmision to capture some form, but if he's not proving effective he needs to be dropped quickly, not persevered with. Definitely want to stick with Sid - been a bit disappointing the last few games he's played, but a real fighter, and adds variation. Who else is there? Will Simon Jones ever be fit? Will Hoggy ever be re-considered?
An alternative is a move away from the traditional 5 batsmen, 1 all rounder, 1 keeper, 4 bowlers structure.
Would you change this maybe?
Your thoughts guys?
