Keeping on soft pitches
« on: June 26, 2011, 08:48:26 PM »

Yesterday I kept on a very soft low pitch. Because of this I had to stand very close to the stumps. Two outside edges came towards me but were gone past me before I had time to react. I normally take my catches standing back but yesterday with the poor carry I couldnt.

Any advice on how to take the catches?

sounds like your in no mans land either stand up or go back if you do not have the confidnece or ability to stand up.
if it early on or the ball is doing things ask the skipper to employ a slip mate and have them very tight to yourdelf width wise

Should have mentioned that I stood up to all the bowlers apart from 2 of them. One was too quick and the other was bowling all over the shop.

If i stand back to where I stand normally then the ball lands about 2 yards in front of me. Its hard to find the right place to stand but hopefully I wont have to play on a pitch like it again

Stand up to the stumps as much as possible. You stand more of a chance taking the ball early off the bat than standing in no mans land. You soon acclimatise to the speed and carry

i keep on a slow low bounce deck all are home games.

i have to stand up to are opening bowling as taking it on two bounces is

a. village
b. not easy some times

just stand up have 1st slip close to you if u miss an edge u miss an edge. its tough poo poo.

it drives me mad when i see a keeper 2ft from the stumps stand up or stand back. i 90% stand up anyway. i tend to find of the quick bowlers on a low deck im more likley to get leg side stumpings

I had the same yesterday. No carry at all. Wore one in the face diving for once after it hit a rough spot from the bowlers run up. 2 black eyes and a cut to the nose. Ended up in no mans Land too after they were spraying it all over the place. Not easy as a keeper

I am slightly confused - one min you are taking glorious legside stumpings, the next your bowlers are bowling an imaculate off-stump line...

Come and stand up! Anyone can keep standing back to pace bowlers in my opinion, standing up is where wicket keeping becomes fun!

I'd just advise you to practice, practice, practice. Instead of batting at our nets I just keep. Also try and get your club to invest in a 'katchet' as these can be used to overtrain really well! Or just get yourself one as they are only £40. Have a look on their website for the tutorial videos!

I'd us a lid though ;)

I love standing up, it just tells batsmen that you're a good keeper and you will get them out!

My main problem is watching the ball into the gloves, I don't do it well enough.

Concentration is an issue. It's all well and good taking the occasional legside stumping, but when you're not taking regulation takes/catches it counts for nothing!

Yh I had this problem last week, I was keeping to a guy bowling at least 75mph and probably pushing 80 at some points  and the pitch was really slow and low. I didn't back myself to stand up cause I know I would get no where near it so I ended up standing about 10 yards back and taking the ball around my ankles, not the best experience I've had keeping but generally if the bowlers are a pace I find I can stand up to I do regardless of the pitch

I'd have been 30 yards back.
