New pads & gloves advice
« on: September 02, 2011, 09:05:47 PM »

First off it's a big relief that the forum is back online as I seem to spend loads of time on here these days and I was getting withdrawal symptoms while it was offline. I have a bit of a pads/gloves dilemma at the moment and wanted to ask advice on here.

Currently I have kook blade 950 gloves which are brilliant and some puma tribute 4000 pads which are starting to get a little worn. Both the pads and gloves are 2 years old now so I'm considering new kit.

When I was younger I used to spend ages looking at kit in the romida catalogue and this addiction has grown due to this site. Now I can actually afford decent stuff and I'm tempted to get new pads and gloves so want to run a few options past you all for your thoughts.

I've just bought a redback paradox and like the matching pads but not very keen on the design of the gloves. I'm sure the gloves are good quality and the traditional ones look better than the modern ones. If they are good softs then I'd be tempted to get redback pads & gloves to go with my bat.

Or alternatively I could keep my kook gloves as they're still ok and get some matching blade 950 pads (some were on eBay for about £50 a week or two ago).

Next option is Charlie French PPR1 pads and gloves which johnny can get a deal on. Never used this stuff before and it looks good but can anyone recommend these?

Or finally I'm open to any other suggestions on pads & gloves. Budget is at the very most £120 for both and having had pittard palms on my kook gloves I'd like the same again. Open to both modern and traditional sausage styles and also any makes that anyone can recommend.

Thanks

The GN softs are nice matching, esp. the legend pads. Best pads around by a country mile.

I have the Redback traditional pads and gloves which are very good quality. The pads are quite light and comfortable and although I have heard reports of the buckles breaking, I haven't had any problems with mine. The traditional gloves are the first sausage style glove I have had as i usually go for the segmented finger style. Initially they took a bit of wear to get the right amount of bend in the fingers but once this was done they were very comfortable and offered a very good level of protection having been hit on the glove a few times.

Having said that, I am changing my softs - not because there is anything wrong with the Redbacks, I'm just one of those people that likes everything to match  :D

Look now further than Kookaburra, they do the best soft goods in my opinion. I have just gotnthe kahuna 1000 stuff in the romida sale and they really are top notch

How about Puma. You can get the calibre tricks 6000fxt & tricks 5000 gloves for around £120 in the cricket-hockey sale. Bit colourful but one of the best soft makers on the Market.

Thanks for all the replies, I did look at ayrtek but think I prefer other softs. I'll take a look at the puma softs later today

Has anyone used the Charlie French softs? They do look good but just wondering if anyone else has them already.

Right I've done a bit of looking round and I reckon I'm down to the following options now:

Charlie French PPR1 pads and gloves
SS gladiator pads and gloves
Puma calibre 5000 pads and gloves (not sure about these though due to the 2 strap design)

I've discounted the redback and ayrtek softs as I'm not keen on the designs and also not going to go for the kook blade 950 pads as they're over £80 by themselves.

Any recommendations or comments on my three options? Are the CF gloves ok as I'd seen some comments on here that they were quite small?

Puma calibre tricks 6000fxt pads are 3 strap. (Iridium 6000fxt's that I have are 2 strap)

I would say you'd be nut to pay £95 for Charlie French's pads, Charlie French is not a big company or good company infront of like of GM, GN, Puma etc so I would never advise you to buy those pads.

SS Gladiator Pads - I have them and they are very nice indeed. These pads are big heavy due to cane insert but they have lovely fitting and when you wear them they are very comfortable as well.

I have Puma Iridium FXT 6000, they are quite similar to Calibre FXT expect the difference being three straps and colour scheme. If you are opting out for them then I would say go for Iridium FXT as Owzat have them for £75 which will save you around £35. These Puma pads are very impressive indeed, they are very nice and the workmanship is overall great.

As others have mentioned I would say Gray Nicolls Legend pads are very good, in fact I would say they are the best. I currently have like 10 pairs of pads and I would say the best ones out of all are easily GN Legend pads, they are awesome. A bit expensive but well worth the money. The Legend gloves don't have pittard palm but the palm is already too soft to be honest.

Thanks for the replies, I forgot to mention that the calibre flex tech are out of stock on cricket-hockey so that's why I'd changed to the calibre 5000. The flex tech do look good but not sure how long I will take or if they will come back in stock.

As for the CF softs I agree £95 for pads alone is too much but with the discount that johnny firefly can get in them the pads and gloves fall comfortably in my budget. Best not say exactly how much they are but if you're interested in these contact johnny. They do look really good though so I am tempted by these. Only thing is the gloves are out of stock at the moment.

If anyone else is after softs I'd recommend following johnny on twitter as he cn get what seem like good deals on CF, Hunts and SS stuff at the moment.
