it is reasonable to suggest I don't think trigger movements are particularly helpful in most cases.
if you have a simple technique, like James, there is less that can go wrong

if you look at prior, Morgan, ab de villiars, shane Watson, they all stay still, and the aren't too bad...

a well coached trigger can work, but they aren't usually well coached.

The last thing Morgan does is stay still!

Morgans feet are still, he flexes his knees.

The fellows at Pitchvision have plenty to say about trigger movements:

it is almost as if he has read my book...

I admit to being sceptical about the
need for a trigger at club level at all.
Bowlers are not the same standard
and the whole thing is prone to going
horribly wrong if not taken in context
correctly. If you must have one, stick
to the basics of being still at the point
of delivery. If you are struggling for
form look elsewhere to turn it around,
a trigger is not the answer.

Looks good from where I sit mate :)

I used the autofeeder at the Oval a couple of weeks ago, it's a weird experience cause I'm personally not used to having that much time between balls on the Machine..
But I guess it's more like a match situation :D

Did the balls get stuck in the machine at all, cause that kept happening at the Oval...

Cook is a good example of someone who had triggers and when out of form they were coached out of him, then couldn't buy a run so went back to what felt natural and we all know what happened next. I Believe If a trigger movement feels natural do it, if it doesnt don't do it . Chanderpaul's shuffle is so unorthadox but he makes it look so natural and you cant argue with his records, Yardy however looks clueless.

I posted video of my batting and in that I had trigger movement so Buzz told me not to have trigger movement so I left trigger movement behind and now I feel better.

I don't recommend trigger movement, it gets a bit hard to go on back foot

So thanks Buzz!

A press is ok CD, but not planting your weight in a different position (Trigger).

Anything short and at my ribs I've had it, but that's because my hands aren't high enough. Was planning to go to the same place James did within the next couple of weeks.

I suspect by the time you got to the back foot shots your patients was wearing a little thin and you wanted to give it large - always a temptation.

Spot on - it was the last 10 minutes and I thought I'd have a slash!

If you were to do this again, I would suggest you crank the rev's up a little and test yourself a bit more. I felt that you weren't challenging yourself enough - that doesn't mean do this... http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YzYUDC7pWzA&feature=related

Ha ha, I've seen that video before Buzz - I won't be doing that anytime soon! I would normally have the machine on 70-75 but this was a nice gentle session. The M5 crash had happened the night before right near me so my mind was elsewhere to be honest.

If you want to increase your bat speed I would look a little at your pick up - try to push the bat away behind you rather than pulling it into your chest - but that is hyper critical - and may not be a comfortable change.

I've seen this somewhere else as well - it helps play the shorter ball too as the bat isn't coming up to meet the ball, I'd have a better chance of hitting down on it. Will try this next time.

James, the feeling you want is as if you are rocking a baby and yes it will make it easier for you to play back foot shots.

where in the order do you bat normally or like to?
what speed was the bowling machine set at?
what bat is it and the weight?

I've batted at 1, 3 and 6 this year. I like opening but we have two good openers already and I only tend to do it when one of them can't play.

The machine was set at about 60-65mph.

My bat is a Slazenger V2 - I'm sure some people on here would spit on it if they could ;-) and it weighs about 2.7

To me you looked like a strong front foot batter who likes to drive. I thought your back-lift at 90 degrees looks 'text book' although it's a very individual thing and wondered about how your feet are as the ball is released; I like to be on the balls of my feet but u looked flat, which personally makes me slower to react.

Good point, I do look flat. I'm conscious of tipping over though and sometimes feel like I'm leaning over to the off side and start getting off balance. I was just consciously trying to stand more upright/balanced

I've been wondering about a trigger movement too and whether to introduce one when i next get into a practice net or session which your videos has made me want to do.. it's been 2 months!!! not sure if this is possible or wise.
Any comments anyone?

I've tried before and it sort of worked but I end up moving when my head should be still so I stopped it.

I also wondered if any of your front defensive shots could be driven away comfortably for singles or twos and whether it's risky to play around your legs onto the onside which leads me to my last question...

Definitely, I was just concentrating on good shape and not trying to hit too hard.

Which ball gets you out most often or did last season?

I was bowled mostly and LBW several times, albeit by good balls (aren't they always!) I remember one match where I couldn't play the guy's inswingers for toffee. I was also bowled first ball by another inswinging delivery. I'd say bowled is probably my main method of getting out, usually playing across the line although that's what I'm trying to sort out!!! I can't remember the last time I edged behind or was caught on the boundary.

Thanks guys.. sorry James, hope I haven't hi-jacked your post...

Thanks for the videos... hope my questions and comments are worthwhile..

Not at all, it's great that people are interested in talking about this stuff.

Your comment and question are very much appreciated thank you.

Does it need to be held higher before the release or in a Brian Lara kind of up then down when the ball has been released and you've picked the length - If you know what I mean?
