Do you walk?
« on: December 28, 2011, 11:26:02 AM »

Just wondering what people's thoughts are....

If you nick a thin one early on in your innings do you walk? If you don't walk do you still give some stick to an oppo batsmen that does the same?

Yes I have always walked bar one or two incidents. Might change my mind after the amount of bad decisions I got last year! Cricket should be played in that sort of spirit I think, most people will disagree I'm sure.

Have always walked since I saved a game having not walked when I was 16.  Had too much guilt on that occasion, and particularly when the umpires are either players or amateurs, I think it helps them to take the decision out of their hands.

In my view, what goes around comes around. You're bound to get bad decisions, so when you get lucky (i.e nick one and get given not out) make the most of it!

However I will add, this only applies with Official Umpires, if it is teammates umpiring I will walk

I walk everytime as don't feel right not doing but some lads I know don't and that's up to them but I like to give serious abuse out so would feel like a hypocrite if I stood there

You get enough dodgy decisions, like someone else said if it's a decent set of lads i'll walk, if they are less than savoury then i'll stand there all day.

To be honest, i'd even check with the umpire if i was clean bowled.

don't walk unless I smash the cover off it. As with the other guys I have had too many shockers to be noble about it. ie.

1. Left arm over bowls it half way down the track, low bouncing deck and it hits me just above the knee roll. It's not swung, never pitched on the stumps - out?
2. Father/son combo - hows that Dad, that's out son. Foot well down the track outside off - out?

People cheat all the time and there is no point taking the high ground as you only end up losing. I got some fearful stick in a league game last season for a slight glove that the umpire didn't hear. This team of saints had already turned down 3 plumb lbws when we bowled to further their cause, why should they continue to benefit from cheating? I batted on and we won, as we would of done much earlier if they had given our lbws.

Will add that a fair/decent oppo makes a difference to walking, as does playing sundays.

I used to be in the bat under arm camp but after some of the decisions I saw last season, I can't deny changing my mind - eg, the lad who managed to inside edge a looping outswinger so that the keeper took it diving down the leg side only for their umpire to give him not out, or the lad who ponied one up to mid off and got away with it because it "hadn't carried" even though the lad who caught it took it six inches off the deck...

...worst thing is, the TVL is way better than any of the Middlesex leagues for this sort of thing!

depends who is umpiring, if its one of the lads like on a sunday then il always walk, as it makes them look stupid if you dont. but when theres an umpire on a thursday or saturday, its there job to give you out, so if they dont, they dont
