ITypical example would trying to take the batsmans head off on puddings when line and length would be better.

LOL Remember playing against one such SA gentleman. Sharpish, but on a complete pudding it went like this....

Ball 3 pitched up driven four four.
'That's it, no more in your half you ****
Ball 4 Bumper, pulled into the houses for six
Me - 'Cmon you can bowl faster than that - put your back into it'
Ball 5 - Shorter and faster, but pudding of a wicket meant it got pulled into the houses again
Me 'No pace today then mate?'
Him Something in Afrikaan
Ball 6 - About hit his toe and I sniggered as I put the ball into the houses again.
Me - you'll put your back out like that, go and fetch the ball son and have a blow after, think you're done for a while.  :) :) :)

I never walk simply because I enjoy batting too much to go unless I have to.

I've played with some lovely Saffas but I've known a few who have used their ego more than their brains against the oppo. Typical example would trying to take the batsmans head off on puddings when line and length would be better. It's a good trait as well, believing in yourself, but tends to be the Saffas that typify it more than others.

Very true and well said I to have seen it many times...

Most of the old school batters I know walk, but most of the younger generation swear 'they've never hit' and would 'walk if they hit it'. I don't blame them tho if their Hero's aren't walking then they won't. A video should be shown to the youngsters before a ball is bowled about Adam Gilchrists etiquette and Respect for the game in '03 against Sri Lanka. That epitomises what cricket is all about. Reading this back I sound like a deranged old man but I'm 26 lol, I've always walked until a couple years back when a rival batsman stood his ground after nearly cutting it to 2nd slip. I now walk against every team bar that one. :D

I always used to walk, but after getting a few bad decisions, like getting given caught behind after it hit me on the elbow. I choose not to now. Obviously unless it finds 4th slips hands head height.
Also it depends who your playing against sometimes, as some teams are complete (insert words here)
I know that isn't the correct attitude, and I will probably get stick for it, but some teams don't deserve my wicket :D

The Gilchrist myth makes me laugh. I'm pretty sure you'll find a few occasions when he's smashed it to slip and not walked. Alot of the "walk when I hit it" started during Steve Waugh's reign as skipper, when mental disintegration was at it's worst and the Aussies where getting alot of bad press for their tactics. Show me an aussie who walks and I'll show you a flying pig. Played with plenty and unless they cut it to point, they never walk. Played a cup game against Wetherby a couple of years ago. We made 90 odd and Wetherby (5 divisions higher) were 20-2 when their overseas aussie smashed it to the keeper. It couldn't hit anything else, he was cutting it lol. The umpire was as deaf as a door post and gave it not out, the aussie went on to score all their runs :-(

Haha that's hilarious mate! How many runs did you get that day?

There's one team we played last year (Harrow 3s) who were full of South Africans. Safe to say they were a fiery bunch..
In friendlies, if I know I've hit it I always walk. League games I tend to walk, there was one game I held my ground last year but that was just to check that the ball carried as it was a miracle catch by the keeper inside edge diving one handed to his left...

I have never consciously hit it and not walked if I know it's carried. I will continue that way until I get a couple of bad decisions, and in about 5 years if you ask me I won't be walking in the league! Maybe it's the wrong thing to do from a club point of view, cause getting out on 30-40 when you could have got a big 100 to win the game can be the difference between promotion and relegation etc...

We sometimes have to umpire our own matches and I find that being a charming chap when you first meet and greet the opposition - enquiring about the health of the family, how busy the roads were etc and then winning the toss and bowling is an excellent tactic   ;)

I was taught from a young age by our previous club coach to always walk. So that it what I do, even if at times I regret doing it as could have gone on to make a big score. I personally believe that it even's itself out by the end of the season, the good and bad luck.

Agreed. Now here is the flying pig; now show me an Aussie who walked (apart from Gilly)..lol

In my view, what goes around comes around. You're bound to get bad decisions, so when you get lucky (i.e nick one and get given not out) make the most of it!

Haha, first time I've heard "what goes around comes around, so don't ever take the moral highground" :P Haha

I've always walked, if I wanted to be a deceptive (No Swearing Please), I'd play poker, not cricket

The whole "i get bad decisions" is an epic cop out. Umpires don't make mistakes unless batsmen do.

Noone has ever been given caught behind leaving or lbw hitting a 4 through midwicket.
I always have a laugh at people who feel they are so unlucky given caught behind. If you are swinging and missing, its not the umpire who is having a poor game and making bad decisions.

erm, actually I have.  Twice.  Once there was a sound (the keeper suggested it might have brushed the stumps) the other time I was nowhere near the ball!
