big problem for me when the opposition cross the line with their chat, i can handle the normal 'banter', but when it is taken too far i cant seem to resist getting wound up and losing focus on what i am trying to achieve in the specific situation.

so, this season i am going to (secretly!) study from a guy at our club who thrives on this sort of thing (as not to reveal the cricket obsessed maniac that i am). he has a reputation for playing big, big innings in ill tempered games, if i notice anything about his approach i will pass it on to you lot. from previous observations, he likes to give as good as he gets, both with his mouth and, more importantly, with his bat.

right now (pre-study) i think its more the strong character and mental strength of this person, combined with a natural ability for batting and a craving for competition which stimulates him in these situations.

Our opening bat thrives on people giving him stick. In one heated game a few years ago the bowler called him a **** - we need 80 to win, and he knocked 70 of them in the space of about 10 overs.

Last season I was batting as a tail ender in a match. First ball I get a quick beamer to my face and I have to duck I get up to find the bowler staring me out and he said " I will give you two options I will either break your face with more beamers or you can do the decent thing and get out" Made me so angry that I tried to demolish his next ball that was a slower ball and it ended up hiting middle stump. Never been so mad!
"Excuse me umpire, I believe there are rules against that sort of thing" is a good way to wind the bowler back up.

Generally I'm not overly bothered about what people say as I'm down the order. I have been known to accidentally swat the odd cocky keeper with an exaggerated back swing when attempting to flay a wide ball though... :-[

I seem to get a lot of stick when I'm bowling, last year I just brushed it off with a wink or blowing the batsman a kiss, that seemed to wind them up! Just cannot resist it at times. When I'm batting, I don't really care, Although I've had the keeper shout to the bowler some stuff suggesting he wants the bowler to break one of my bones, which is fun!

Read a great one in book of cricket sledging:

a keeper used to ask the batsman if he breathed out or in as he hit the ball.
batsman would then think about this rather than shot playing.

I am now in love with "seat belts on lads, this one can't drive"

Those ones are normally class, just little stuff like "hang on, you had a trigger movement a minute ago, where's it gone?!" and stuff like that. Psychological stuff, that makes you think, absolutely killer!

Didn't particular annoy me but I once heard someone say "he's got more defence than north Korea". Did make me giggle

Nothing really puts me off, I love the banter.  If comments are putting u off then u need to just smile otherwise they have won the battle.  I give loads of stick when fielding but it's got be be original . I would be embarrassed if a teammate said " fasten your seatbelts". Shut up lad & leave the sledging to me.

Love this idea, I'm so gonna try this in the coming season!

Do you blink when you hit the ball?

Can't think of a specific time when opponent talked me out, but I'm sure they have sometimes. I quite enjoy blanking the bowler who's trying to wind me up. Often wander towards them doing some gardening and making out I'm oblivious to their verbals.

The biggest sledging problems I've had was from a fellow team mate. My Sunday village side has a weak batting line up and me and one other player usually need to score the bulk of the runs. One particular player would sledge you throughout your innings from the boundary. If you played out 3 dot balls or failed to hit a boundary every over he'd shout "Test match, get a move on!" This would get me out as I'd end up attacking from ball 1. My Saturday team always said I needed to play myself in more. He'd go out smack a few quick boundaries, then get out and thinking his job was done.

He left a few seasons ago and the club is now a much happier team. The first season he didn't play I score ten 50's and 1 hundred in 16 games. Shows what effect sledging can have on your confidence.

The Mark Boucher one is great and seems to really get to some people...

'What are you averaging this year mate, 9-10, no more than that surely. Top score 20?' Keep on mentioning how the pressure is mounting as they get to 20, 'don't chuck it now' 'we'll all clap you if you get past it'.... and see the steam rise!

One memorable match, their last man comes out needing 1 to win off 1 ball. The lad a talented leggie hasn't bowled and so hasn't done anything so far. He's also a young lad and obviously nervous coming out to face the last ball....

'Mate you've done nothing so far, don't let your team down now and lose the match on the last ball - they'll tell you it doesn't matter, but we all know iof you get out you've lost the match for them' and so on. Fair play he gets a single and ties the match...

Most sledgers are losers.

Play hard and play fair.

Enjoy the great game!
