bats
« on: March 08, 2012, 10:31:05 PM »

Intentionally posted in this section....

I've got 4 bats

1: 1 classic traditional, flat edge v shaped bat, straight face

2: classic modern mix, slight edge, v shaped bat, slightly bowed face

3: Big edge, concaved, high spine

4: Offset edge, slight concaving

Lets disregard pickup and ping they are all excellent Oooo and they all have a middle middle....

What does each of the profiles provide to the guy that is using them, how and why?

Answers on a postcard or this thread open to all.... but there enough experts on here now that could / should be able to answer it...

My take;

1. A vertically long middle.
2. Thinking about it.
3. Wide (horizontally) middle but short in terms of length (vertically)
4. A long middle vertically and wide low sweetspot.

Edit: I think #4 will be better than #1 in terms of middle length/width hence a longer and 'bigger' middle for #4

1. Long central middle. Balls outside this could cause twisting of the blade as the centre of gravity/ rotation point will be high towards the spine.

2. Same as above but brings the hands forward due to the bow?

3. Wide middle. Good value for shots even those mistimed/ towards the edge.

4. Low wide middle where edges are highest and long middle where the 'middle/ high point of the spine' is. Gives good value for shots on most wickets as the offset edge helps with low wickets and the higher spine height/ middle for slightly higher bouncing tracks.

Not sure if half that makes sense but I think I know what I mean.  Looking forward to some of the other answers. Good way to learn

1) A purist's delight, provides a long middle  but may experience blade twisting.
2)  Minimises Blade twisting, long middle and slightly widish middle.
3) Ego booster , gives more confidence, gives a wide middle but not long, suitable for someone who can consistently hit the ball around the same area.
4) All of these combined + even better wood distribution.
 :D
No idea what bowing does  : I thought it was to help get hands meet over the ball and allow more control.

1: 1 classic traditional, flat edge v shaped bat, straight face
There is more wood behind the bat that gives more perches for your shot, more control in the shot without a bow.

2: classic modern mix, slight edge, v shaped bat, slightly bowed face
Same as above with the addition of: The slightly larger edge allows for a bit more wood the be behind the ball on a shot that is edged.

3: Big edge, concaved, high spine
The larger edges and concaving allow for the to be more wood to be behind the shots out the middle and edge aswell as allowing more wood for less weight.

4: Offset edge, slight concaving
The off set edges allow for shot that are a bit lower or higher than the sweetspot to gain a similar amount of power in those areas, and slight concaving allows for bigger edges and spine with less weight with one with no concaving and the same weight.

Not in great detail but it is late :)

Nice to see grey matter challenged rather than the wallet prised open, will run a few new ones past you soon in person.

Maybe too late at night or maybe challenging perceptions too much as surprised not to see someone nail this.

Absolutely no idea what you are on about!!!! A shape like this a shape like that!!!! What a load of bull!!!!! Problem is people believe the marketing bull too much!!! What ever works for you, go with it!!!! i would rather stay out in the middle and score a lot of runs  with a bat you all hate and look down on!!!!!!!

1: 1 classic traditional, flat edge v shaped bat, straight face
Small but intense sweet spot due to most of the wood being in the middle

2: classic modern mix, slight edge, v shaped bat, slightly bowed face
Slightly larger middle than 1, presuming the spine is lower if the edge is larger?

3: Big edge, concaved, high spine
Forgiving middle but less 'intense' due to the wood being spread more evenly throughout the bat

4: Offset edge, slight concaving
Probably the best compromise. Still has the punch of 2 in the middle but most of the forgivness of 3.

This hurt my brain at this hour! :)

Well let me tell you wood distribution is like Roulette. Put everything on where you know the ball will fall and win big, get it wrong and you lose.

Like Boycott says, split your innings out into 4 hours chunks to avoid losing your concentration
