Slogging and bat weight
« on: April 03, 2012, 07:27:54 PM »

I see on forum guys talking about using heavy bats(heavier than one's normal bat weight) for slogging.
Is it the case with most of us or someone around here uses a lighter blade for slogging as well.

Same here.
I use a lighter one too.(thought I was the only weird one out here)
It helps me have a better swing at the ball.
Honestly I can't slog for life. LOL  :D

I just hit ball hard but I hold bat higher up in t20 so lighter weight but this year got a shorter blade bat

I used a Newbery Uzi last year around 2'9 in weight that helped me get boundaries easier than with previous bats. As it was a Long Handle it was easier to free the arms and swing at the ball and because it had a huge profile, when it middled it flew to the boundary. Saying that I never scored any 6s with it but a team mate did so easily when he borrowed it but he was much more of a slogger.

So, as I'm a straight bat player slogging doesn't come naturally to me; yes a light pick up bat helps but then so does a bat with a huge middle/profile and also the Long Handle and Shorter blade helps the freeing up of the arms.. but saying all that I still think timing and technique count for more but if the technology exists.. why not use it...

All about using a long handle for T20 style batting.

Interesting.. don't the other players think you're being a little ostentatious? I have a number of bats but would only take two to a game having trialled them at nets first e.g. back-up bat .. saying that all my bats have different profiles so one would be suited to a slower wicket where the ball stays low vs a t20 bat etc...

Do you consider the pitch and/or weather conditions when making your decision or do you really just go for gut feeling and aesthetics?

Graham Napier in this month's wisden cricketers magazine says that he uses a lighter bat than normal for slogging.

If I ever need to slog then I just whip the Mongoose out. (Same weight as my normal bat if you're interested)

i tried this theory about slow low wickets and hard fast wickets low middle higher middle etc was all a load of crap really,

all i would do is if they had a fast bowler i wouldnt use the 3.2 bat id use a lighter one,

i take most of my bats to games as i allways lend them out to people!

im down to 3 bats at the moment tho gonna try and just keep two for the season

I take a normal bat and a t20 bat to games, dependent on when in the innings I go in to bat... Later =t20.

Simmy.. ur a Saint lending bats to teammates for matches.. I begrudgingly do so in nets but only because of worrying about damage from a yorker etc.. saying that like Tim I only want to keep 2 for the season, the woodstock curve for both formats and the newbery uzi for t20 and my salix rogue as a backup so looking to sell 2 others onto teammates...which may finance another bat later in the season...
I also get what ur saying about matching the bat to the conditions so thanks for that...
