Bag design
« on: April 23, 2012, 05:20:24 PM »

Thought I would share it with everyone a bag design that i have had in my mind for a while and see if anyone wants to try making it :), Please note that since this is inspired by a combination of bags I cannot claim a copyright on this so if anyone wants to take up making it go for it...I would appreciate that I get one heavily discounted :D

Now here are the images and further down i will try and elaborate some features, obviously the drawings are not professional and incomplete. I am more than willing to share the basic bag design inspiration with anyone if they are interested so get a better idea of what it might look like...

Ok so here we go:

1 - This bag is wide enough to hold 4 bats in the bat compartment which has all hard shell walls and soft 4 pockets inside. I hate the idea of having soft shell pockets for bats specially if there might be the weight of other gear on them when laying flat on the ground.

2 - Inside is a removable shelf, Just soft spongy material, strong enough to hold gloves, thigh pads, shirts pants etc...lowest level under the removable shelf is collapsable shoe compartment. You could rest the helmet on top of this and that way the removable shelf does not have to bear the weight of helmet.

3 - There is plenty of open space on the left inside so you could have 2-3 pairs of pads standing up.

4 - Just above the area for the pads is small pocket for keys etc...

5 - Bag has 2 handles, one is small fabric handle as in the drawing. 2nd would be general telescopic one that i could not be bothered to draw...

6 - 3 wheels to make it mobile.

You could also reduce the width of the bag to half (2 bats) and no shelving for a economy version that would still handle plenty of kit and be cheaper..as for the side walls they are fabric but can be made sturdy/solid with a small insert...front flap opens and has potential for a couple other pockets..

so if some one really wants to start this let me know and we can chat...just remember my discount ;) ...inspiration for this bag came to me after i started looking for alternatives to standard kit bags...i like to carry most of my bats weather i use them or not is different issues, and have had problems with kits that are too massive and heavy but still dont fit all my gear...which is 4-5 bats, 3-4 gloves, 1 helmet, 2 pads, shoes and some other items comfortably...

to fit all of that in you would need a massive bag, regardless of the design.
I like the shoe compartment idea,
why have it wedge shaped?

Wedge design was just to make sure it fit standing up in trunks of hatch back cars where laying flat it would require a lot more space...it is a bigger bag and hence a smaller design is also possible...i have actually seen similar designs here for other sports and trust me it wont be that much bigger than any existing cricket bags out there already and still fill all the gear i would want it to...

I love the idea of the hard cased bat compartment  :) I hate it when my Bat gets scratched inside the bag. Have you got an idea of the Dimensions of the bag looks like it would be quite big ?

I will measure up the original inspiration sometime this week and add it...but guessing as a bat is 4 & 1/4 inches if each bat pocket was 5 inches wide with some soft cushoining (as its all hard shell you wont need a log soft padding) you would be looking at 20-25 inches wide bag, not much more than whats out there right now..removalble shelving would be half the that size...

Here is how this bag started...obviously its based on a hockey bag so will need tweaking and some patented features cannot be used or used with licensing etc...add your own bat compartment and reduce the size of shelving...

Great idea Tushar, funnily enough I've been thinking of a similiar idea, although for a duffle bag!

It'd be interesting to know how many bats forum members would like to pack into a duffle?

dunno about a duffle, but I really wish AERO would do the sensible thing and extend their TOUR stand up so that it fits four bats instead of three!

Ahh, but this would be a duffle with a difference!  I'll do some sketches and try and upload them.

One of my sketches does have wheels, but then I'd have to compensate interior space for a retractable handle unless it has something stiched on.  I'm thinking sapce for 3 bats inside, I'll try and work out the dimensions over the next week and get something up on the forum.

Not wanting to steal Tushars thunder but if any of the forum sponsors are interested then happy to discuss my idea.

Great idea that is tushar! Taking ideas from other sports can be good or bad, but i feel if this one was ever taken from the paper and made, you could possibly be on to a winner!

I may try making this at the end of the season, if someone has not already decided to take it up by then, as something to do in winter months other than cleaning up my bats :)...prolly cost me a fortune but oh well :)
