What rules would you change?
« on: April 26, 2012, 12:10:09 PM »

You've been presented with an opportunity by the MCC to change a couple of the laws. Which ones would you change and what would you change them to?

Is there anything that you think should be added to what is already there or simply removed?

How can we improve the game that we love to play and watch?

Blimey Tim, disillusioned with the game of cricket? Or are you planning a Packer'esque breakaway from standard cricket, with bats that hit hte ball further and rules that stop bolwers from being carted around the park. Maybe timeless day/night test matches with multi-ball powerplay overs.

Depends here whether you're talking about the underlying laws of the game of the prlaying conditions of professional cricket.

If the latter, I'd be inclined to make all boundaries the full size of the available playing area and, for international cricket, reduce the allowance for the use of the heavy roller as has worked so well in English County Cricket.

If the laws themselves, I'd say that the two that need some looking at would be the CHUCKING law (get rid of the 15 degrees) and the definition of a wide ball - I'd personally be inclined to have guide lines on both sides to inform decisions!

I agree with the wide law but how would your "chucking" law read???

I'd go back to the previous intrpretation, together with immediate removal from the attack!

Agreed and also the free hit, if you want to keep free hit then give the bowler the option to change his field, you know the batsman cant be given out unless runout..

Totally agree about the 15 degree chucking law, too many players using this as an excuse to chuck, if you bowl with a bent arm you should get removed from the attack.

On another note, in test matches, I would give them a new ball from each end as they have done in ODI's......The very best test matches are the ones where the ball is slightly on top of the bat, this might help to get that balance more regularly...it might not of course but I think it might be worth a try!

Agree on one of those, not the other - back foot no balls would be good for the prevention of injuries and always appeared fairer.

But leg byes - I would hate to see that.  Not because some are not annoying - but because I don't think bowlers should be able to get away with chucking it down the leg side, and the majority of leg byes are off the pad from balls that are tough to get a bat to!

As long as the ball does not cross the boundary its ok to stop the ball with part of the body touching the rope. would save alot of time on tv replays.

I fear that that might have a negative impact on the spinners though?

Stop test matches going off for bad light so early, when the lights still fine.
