SS Bats?
« on: April 21, 2009, 04:11:01 PM »

I can't help but notice that alot of players seem to be using SS bats in the IPL this year whether they are blank with just the 'SS' and 'TON' (Matt Hayden, Ravi Bopara) or have stickered them up (Yuvraj, Sachin, Suresh Rhaina IIRC). Is the quality of these bats considerably better than those made by the companies which sponser these players (I appreciate Reebok and MRF don't make their own bats in the case of Yuvraj and Sachin)? Its not even like they are being made local because they are playing in South Africa (Correct me if I am wrong but I'm assuming it is an Indian Brand). Anybody know the reason for all these players using SS, not only in the IPL but all year round.

If they are of such good quality are they readily available anywhere in the UK?

SS bats do seem to be very good quality, I'd say the handles and finish of the ones I've seen are up there with many English brands. CJI on this forum stock a number of bats as do Aswani another forum sponsor.

I'd have bought one myself in India however the shapes don't do it for me, they seem to be very much focussed on big edges rather than middles and the prices I was quoted for a SS Matrix were in excess of what I'd pay for any custom bat in the UK.

The players using them may be to do with them getting them free, SS may even have a rep out there giving bats away in exchange for advertising. There was one company who did this in the ICL last year, however it didn't work out brilliantly as players just removed the stickers and there were no edge marks like SS have.

SS bats are good quality and perform well, but like tom said the profiles are monotonous. Basically one standard profile with different degrees of bow, stubble change in middle position etc.

I have sued SS bats for over 10 years and found them to be very good. However, in the recent years, they have lost out to SG, BAS and BDM on the value for money.

Tom you have forgot to mention us as I have loads of SS stock and have been selling their bats for the last 3 years.
Our prices(include next day delivery) are even cheaper than any other company based in UK selling genuine SS bats.

SS bats are absolutely top notch. In my opinion the best bats made in India along with BAS. As mentioned above, the profiles are pretty similar with subtle variations, which is a good thing if you like the sub-continental profile (big edges, bow etc) but not great if you like the traditional english profile. I think the best value models are TON LE and TON Ranger. Higher models like Matrix and Gold Edition etc give you better cosmetics but not necessarily better performance.

The matrix can be picked up pretty cheap if you know where to look, I've used a matrix myself last season and it was superb. But id also recommend looking at Bas Shadow or the Bow 20-20 as I've used both and there are brilliant and can be picked up for £120 inc p&p.

Sorry Asad, I had a look on your website but didn't immediately pop out. I scrolled down quickly and was expecting to see it below Salix, but I see it there now. So yeh C-Goyler also worth checking out AS-Sports, along with the previously mentioned CJI and Aswani.

Cheers for the responses guys, really helpful. Some pretty good prices on the sites recommended there if they are of the quality you guys are suggesting. I especially like the look of the Ton LE and the 'Players' edition bats. I guess i'd have to take this up with the retailers but does anyone know if they can get hold of them with just the stamps on them (i.e. what hayden and bopara have)? Is it diffcult to remove stickers from a bat when it is brand new and what sort of marks would be left? It seems a bit silly that a grown man wants to emulate the pro's, i guess i'm a sucker for product placement. ha!
