200-300 runs with a bat in matches usually helps in my view...especially if scored in only 4-6 innings

In my case I think knocking in is where I think I will hit the ball, playing in is where I'm actually hitting it - and given the dimensions of a cricket bat it is truly amazing how far distant these appear to be!  ;)

Based on some of the more vintage bats that I have, which mostly (if not all) feel very, very good, the playing in of a bat is not to be underestimated.

There are three bats that I now use regularly, and all are very, very nice and playing in well. I tend to lend most of them out to other players to get them to do the playing in process for me, which does seem to work nicely. That way they score far more runs than I have a chance to, and thanks to the midweek T20 games, where you can have a bit of a hit, those come quite quickly!

Interesting thread to say the least! A serious amount of wood seems to have exchanged hands in search of the holy grail...  :o

For those of you who haven't already, could you add the name of your "one true love" at the end of your list? Just so we have both the list of "rejects" and your ultimate bat in one place.

I've always felt that their are two stages to getting a bat ready. 'Knocking in' which can constitute anything from an hour to 3-4 hours and 'playing in' which can take 3 months or so! I certainly always try to 'knock' my bat in to a point where I'm getting no seam marks etc but the true performance of the bat never comes before 3-4 months of using it constantly.

When I have more than 2-3 bats to choose from I think I miss out on the optimum performance because it's the 'playing in' bit that I am not doing properly as I am constantly chopping and changing. Hence me selling off a few bats this winter and trying to concentrate on a couple.

i completely agree with you - i also feel as if i have spent the money, then i should invest the time to in the bat to see where it goes. as of right now my SC is still no match from NB Thruxton, but the SC has not got any match time as compared to a 3 season old Thruxton - but obviously I'm not going to sell it off as the "ping" is just not there..

just reading through this thread you realize what a great buyers market this forum is - best place to buy a bat!!
