Bat Servicing
« on: January 04, 2013, 12:53:37 AM »

Not sure how many people bother with having their bats serviced but its something I'm a big fan off. At least every couple of seasons I send my bats back to the manufacturer for a service. Just recently I had my M&H distinction and S6 done and they have come back like new. (Photos to be added later) Millichamp Charge £38 including return carriage for this service.
Over the past couple of years I always keep an eye out for good condition second hand bats that I can buy cheaply enough to refurb and sell on.
Here are 4 bats I picked up off eBay and had cleaned up and relabeled. Unfortunately I didn't take any before pictures but here are a few of the finished products.

I tend to go for the heavier bats, you have more wood to work with!

M&H Solution, 2ib 9oz

M&H Original, circ 1993 2ib 7oz
Didn't manage to do much with this one as it was very well used and ended up giving it away to one of the younger players.

M&H Solution, 2ib 12oz early 2000
This one was a very old solution, possibly around the time when first release. Shape was a little different to the newer solution and had a very heavy pickup so M&H re-balanced and fitted the new graphics. I think it came out really well.

Please ignore the buns and cups in the back ground. It was delivered to my mums house!

M&H S6 2ib 12oz

There are allot of M&H bats floating around my club these days!

Those are incredible! I don't think I have ever sent a bat back to the manufacturers to refurb, as I can just do it all myself at the end of each season for like a pound, but you can see why it costs that premium to get it done! They really do look amazing, you could have probably tricked me by selling me these as very slightly used! :-[

I am interested though, you see that S6? Those inserts at the back, what exactly are they for? Are they a less dense wood, which makes the bat lighter? Or is it actually a sort of lamination, where they make holes up to about 5mm to the surface of the face, and put in the special glue?

Not sure if there is any information on this bat now as its been discontinued. Probably to do with the fact that there are 2 types of wood in the blade, (The blade & the material used to fill the holes).
This design has been knocking around since the 90's, it used to be called the signature.
I remember an overseas from Australia bringing a puma millichamp over with 6 holes in the back. The idea behind this was that because the middle was so low to create a kind of honey comb effect so the bat wasn't too bottom heavy. In my opinion the S6 picks up better than the solution for this very reason even though the shape of both blades is very similar.
I've had a few of these now, great on the drive and for hitting over the top.
Screaming Cat, Laver & Wood and M&H do something similar still to this day but the holes are no longer there!

Here's the description that used to be on the website!

"Millichamp & Hall's S6 is a powerful blade for the dynamic batter. Innovative honeycomb construction gives a light pick-up to a big bat."

Yeh the model with 6 plugs at the back was originally sold as the Signature in Australia. I think M&H introduced it in their second or third year they were on the market. Pretty sure this model was used by Michael Bevan.

Look forward to seeing them. Did you take some pics prior to sending the bat off?

I didn't take any of the bat on it's own but I posted a few playing photo's showing the bat. Proper monster to say it's only a 2ib 8oz!

Finally got the distinction back from M&H today. Was beginning to think it had been lost in the post. I bought this the first year it was released so it's the original shape that was based very much on the retro bat. The back it much more concaved than the retro which give the bat such a pronounced spine. Not sure the pictures really do it justice. As you can see the toe has been repaired with a laminate insert but this hasn't effected the bat at all. This was a common problem with this shape and the reason millichamp changed to the newer shaped distinction with the higher middle and thicker toe. Having said that i'd be quite happy to buy this bat again. It's really come in to its own now. Thanks to M&H for a great job once again.

Cheers

Looks an absolute belter! An absolutely massive bat for 2.8! They have done a great job with it, how much did the refurb set you back?

It was £38, plus the cost to post it to them. For that they strip the bat, clean up, repair any damage, new stickers and grip. Not sure if they repress it or not. I sent an S6 in a couple of years back as the face was de-laminating. When it came back it was like new and played better than before it started to break up.

My bad... I was focused at the pics of the Distinction rather than reading/remembering the OP to be fair!

It's not too bad I guess if the bat originally cost over £300! I have never sent a bat off for a refurb, although I have gotten a toe crack glued up by the retailer once. I will probably be doing the same with my Tour when it looks like it needs a refurb rather than do it myself! As much as I have learned and like doing refurbs, I feel that for something that special, then that extra special treatment is worth it. 8)
