Plenty of advice on this forum about doing toes/edges and leaving the middle. Well here's an example of what can happen when you don't do huge amounts of knocking in to the middle:-




Now this bat has been knocked in for 4 hours+, netted with a few times, given some more knocking in. Batbreaker ball?, possibly but the edges are still intact. It's not the end of the world, I'll stick some fibre tape over the area and send it back to Matt for a refurb in the autumn. Still, make sure you give all the bat a good knocking in.

I'd wager the culprit is a bat-breaker tho it's one of the worst sights in the world on your new baby!

I had a hattori that was fully knocked in and this happened because they were using a bat breaker. I told them if they insisted on using it I was going to walk off. So they changed it, this was in a game as well!

Forgive my simple question.

As there are only 4 grains, does that not indicate itself a potentially softer blade?

That must have been a pretty solid ball to do that.

It happened Sunday but against the slowest bowling I've ever faced. The attack at one point consisted of three 60 year olds bowling donkey drops, I questioned whether there was even a point to facing it! I'm not totally convinced they could put enough pace on the ball even with a bat breaker.

it's gone along the grain a bit,sometimes happens if it's a bit soft pressed.i try to have soft pressed bats myself as what you gain in 'ping' is worth it.
ive had exactly the same happen in nets and confiscated a few conkers recently

the wood is very pale and normally that's a good sign of grade 1.

hammer the area with a bat mallet around it and you might find it blends in a bit

hurts thou to damage your pride and joy in the nets I know.....

Surface cracks are a good sign, so I've been told all these years. Hopefully you can ignore the crack and lay waste to the bowling next time!

That's what I'm going to do and a general bit of face knocking in.

Ryan, I'm quite surprised how many look close to the middle, that said at the speed they bowled the biggest danger was falling asleep while waiting for the delivery to come down.

Just out of curiosity could it be that you knocked the bat too much? I have had a couple of bats where after hours of knocking in the middle this develops. You can hit it as hard as you like with the mallet but indentations form, all you see is this crack/fracture along the grain lines but the bat plays really well...

I have always wondered if you can achieve surface cracks that develop on a well played in bat with knocking process...There was a very hard pressed GM that did it ( 30 to 60 mins of knocking daily for 2 weeks) and also happened to my Lekka, both bats played really well...
