Were half way through our 8 week programme, we did singles this week where we bat in pairs and every ball we hit we have to scamper a run. Gets the heart rate going and is more realistic than hitting ball after ball.

Personally working on discipline and not trying to smash the cover off every ball...there apparently is such a thing as leaving the ball?!?
I really like the idea of having a more constructive indoor net session. We generally just turn up and bat and bowl for 90 mins. I think there is so much more you can do in terms of improving skills.

Working on keeping my head looking at batsmen during my delivery stride and also keeping my wrist straight at point of release. I have a habit to have it at a 45 degree angle when I deliver the ball. Also keeping my front foot straight at point of release so It helps with accuracy and also swings it to slip cordon

Batting wise, keeping still as a block of ice in my stance and my head straight. Also not backing onto leg stump when its bowled down leg

I have to admit, given a lot of clubs spend so much on paying players etc etc, it still baffles me why very few actually provide quality coaching to their players. Most just do 'nets' and offer some generic advice but as bowlers generally don't then bowl ball after ball in that area to improve it it's pretty much wasted. Very few seem to actually run 'proper' and effective net sessions that will actually improve players.

Maybe it's just the few different clubs nets I've been too but the clubs have ranged from WEPL Prem down to about div 1 so it's supposed to be the better sides.

My Daughter is on the EPP at Somerset and for the last few weeks they have had net sessions. These sessions have not concentrated on technique but have focused on scoring areas, hitting the gaps, plans against different types of bowling, running between wickets etc. whilst the bowlers have bowled in pairs working to specific plans.

It has certainly got them thinking much more about the game and i think lots of clubs could learn from doing something similar.

exactly, these sound a lot more constructive.

I am currently helping a 13yr old who is playing for 'county' or 'district' or whatever and I've been trying to get him to play a simple forward defence and drive. It's taken a few weeks to get him out of the bad habits etc. I then learn that not only have his coaches noticed he's got better but they spent their last few weeks learning... The reverse sweep and the lap... My only question when I lifted my head out my hand was 'umm, why don't they concentrate on the basic bloody shots first!!'

Every kid who comes into my net tries at least one dilscoop or similar.

A few BOLA adjustments and clean bowling them 3 times a row with big inswinging yorkers soon stops them from doing that....

haha.

It just struck me that they are focussing on the wrong things. Surely at the young age you want to get the basics right no? I'm no coach so what do I know but I was a pretty useful footballer and at a young age all we did was the basics.. day in day out.

Hmmm... I take it you normally get natural outswing then Tush? I used to get inswing all the time, and then I found that I could swing the ball out by changing the seam and the way my arm came round, and could bowl both as a stock delivery, but just didn't get consistent swing. (Sometimes I swung balls from middle stump to off the pitch!) Now I have changed my action, and found much more control in my swing coupled with more pace. At least that's what I have found in the nets!

I used to have natural inswing but over last few years as action changed a little to find more pace and watching Steyn videos i started working on outswing. Now i can get it to move out very well but no matter what i try inswing is not working, i know one problem is my arm is not coming down right but that and release is what i will be trying tomorrow...

Not all clubs just keep paying out lots of money to players! At our club we have three senior coaches working with the first xi squad and prefer to invest money on training equipment rather than players.  The Quintic video analysis software has been really useful

I know it's not all clubs fella, I was being wildly general. It's just the general impression I get from all the different clubs nets I've been too over the last few seasons.

I actually worked on playing the pull shot in our net session last night. For some reason I have a habit of moving to the leg side and trying to run bouncers off my bat over towards third man or the slips. I am hoping to move back and towards the offside and either play the ball for a single to deep fine leg or pull it depending on the bounce. I do the same to shot low bouncing balls on my pads. Any suggestions?

Really working hard on not falling over to the off side so that I don't miss out on easy runs through the leg side. As a cack hander, I get quite a lot of leg side stuff but I don't always get a bat on what should be free hits. I've found that narrowing and opening my stance a bit is helping.

Right now I'm working on getting my head over the ball, and my shot placement.  One of the areas I've been told to look at is to have my bat finishing up pointing in the direction I want the ball to go in.

For someone who has never received any proper coaching the sessions I've invested in have been well worth it, and I'd thoroughly advise anyone in a similar situation to me to do some! My only issue now is getting to nets with the new job!  >:(
