Panesar had always been a one dimensional bowler. He hasn't changed much atall. If the pitch doesn't suit him he is quite ineffective. It's not as if he has forgotten how to bowl a doosra all of a sudden

He didn't bowl much different in India to here just had much more assistance from the surfaces. He will never change his style

Got to enjoy the success of players like Fulton when it comes - I think, patriality aside, that most of us would accept that he is technically limited and fully deserving of the journeyman tag that has been foist upon him - his first ton was almost an FU to the world, a statement that he was damn well going to get one beforehe retired whatever amount of time it took, this one was more spontaneous and therefore more exciting to watch.  England, for the third time in recent years, seem guilty of believing that they had suddenly "made it" and taking lesser opposition lightly as a result.

You say it's mental, but if you don't perform then you deserve to go down in the rankings!
Doesn't matter if we beat India on their home turf....they have improved and we have performed poorly since then.

Therefore why should we deserve to stay 2nd in the rankings?
If we give ourselves a kick and perform in Summer, then no doubt we will move up again. But only if we perform and deserve it!

While some folks on here are obviously not huge fans of Stuart Broad I've always been prepared to give him the benefit of the doubt, but after seeing his petulant, tantrums over the past few days they've really put me off big time.

Broad is a good bowler, However he seems to sulk when things do not go his way. Also what is up with his batting, first innings they needed some stability and careful batting but he batted without a care in the world.

I don't believe we deserve anything after the way we have performed and New Zealand deserve everything they get they have been by far the better team. Do you think India would've performed better than England against New Zealand?  The fact that India, a team that were completely abliterated by England home and away and Australia away will be 2nd in the rankings.

we dont have any right to win matches just by turning up, credit where it's due-and that's to the New Zealanders,they've played better than us and they've got nothing to lose. What worries me is the body language last night,we seemed to give up and that's not acceptable.

the pitches have been a bit unusual but NZ seem to swing it and seam it more than us.
Interesting most of the TV and media are concentrating on our bowling(which has been toothless) but it's the batsmen that have under performed for ages.

I think the batsmen are to blame again - not enough consistent runs in the first innings, that is what causes pressure. You can't blame the bowlers, who have been solid for a long time.

My biggest grip is that in all great teams (which ours is not, mearly a good team regardless of the result tonight) have at least one stroke player in the top 3, we have 3 blockers.
The West Indies had Dessie, Gordon with Viv at 3, the Aussies had Slats or Hayden with Ponting at three. These guys will make a statement at the top of the order. Our team is three blockers then three hitters then prior. This is uneaven. I am not going to debate the players, who I think are the best we have (Bell included, sorry Manormanic ) But if we have Trott at three and KP at 4 as immovable objects in the order, then one of Bell or Root needs to be opening with a calmer player, like Compton in at 5, this will make the balance of our batting order more sensible for me.

I am starting to wonder whether the number of tours is having an impact, and primarily on the psyche. The India tour was tough, however you look at it and England have often looked like they really don't want to be in NZ. While that's the wrong attitude, I can understand why they might be feeling that way.

NZ have looked better and hungrier throughout.

good points Buzz and Tim, back in the day....yes the Windies had players who could take the game away from the oppo,same with the Aussies in their prime.
cook,compton and trott are much the same methods.
Trotty we have come to rely on so much thou,and what a good job he does,and Cook.

ive always thought KP should bat 3-then if you look at or order it fits a bit more together.

And yes I think also our players are tired,India was an unbelievable result that took it's toll.

We have also missed Swanny to get things going a bit....
But if we lose tonight NZ will have deserved a win.

A loss might get some questions going too, Flower has never been afraid to make changes if required
