New T20 style bat - First Attempt
« on: March 06, 2013, 09:48:12 PM »

I've been wanting to wake a T20 style bat for a while now so decided to give it a go last weekend.

I noticed that one of the clefts i picked up had a crack at the top which i thought would cut out in a standard length blade but it didn't. This made it the perfect candidate to become my first T20 bat. I've dropped the shoulders by around 1.5 inch and also reduced the width of the blade to 4 inch.

First thing that needed to be done after splicing and cutting the shoulders was to repair the crack.

So i decided to cut out as much of the crack i could.

Then i had to cut some spare willow to fit.

Once nice and tight i glued with some animal glue.

Then once dry i trimmed with the bandsaw before shaping with the drawknife.

So next thing to do was to start shaping the profile.

This one was taken when it was around 3lb

Sanded, polished and binded

Stickered up

Looks good mate. One question for u? What made u cut out the crack? Would it not have been better to glue it and then once shaped the bidding to the handle adding more strength? Just wondered if cutting out the damage weakens the shoulder more than a repair would have to the crack.

Nice work Ryan and pretty willow . I have reduced the shoulder on a bat similarly but a bit unsure about the length of the splice being shorter would increase strain on it.

Toe 18mm
Shoulder 18mm
Edges 40mm
Spine 55mm

Handle length around 330mm
Blade length around 520mm

Weight around 2.11.6oz haven't weighed it since gripped.

Anything else nick? Inside leg measurement or anything?

The only reason i cut the cracked section out was because it had bits missing and wanted to stop the crack from continuing down the blade. The top of the bat gets subjected to a lot of vibration so thought it was a safer bet.
