also sad for Compton as I think this will be his last game.

Yeah agree on compton. Looks like last game.
Really struggled, got stuck in block mode, missed out on quite a few half volleys.

Nice response from Broad to this. Hard to watch as a NZer but great bowling.
Not sure Broad was responding to me on here mate lol. Anyway, he does this once in a while when his place is at risk. Maybe he should play for the team and not just turn it on when he feels his place is at risk.

Yeah.. He was more scared than anything else. Trying so hard to impress and stay in bat, but forgot to score runs and enjoy the game! There was a huge difference between cook and compton, cook had freedom to play as he was under no real pressure, but compton had a lot of pressure to perform. He tried too hard and had no freedom.

I'm a little bit gutted for Compton. I always like seeing the new players come up from the county circuit. I think his reaction after getting out today said it all, he knew that he needed runs but it just didn't happen. I don't think that the door is completely closed as of yet. If he goes back to Somerset and gets some big scores and confidence back he could still be in that line up come the first test. Would it be Root shot straight up the order or Trott to go to 2 like some of the commentators suggested? All I hope for though is that if Root was to be pushed that he didn't fail and struggle.  He's had a good start and just hope it can contimue, like every England supporter!

There are two county matches Somerset are playing and I'm sure they will be seeing if Compton gets his confidence back. In my opinion the third match will be the most important for him as Somerset will be playing Australia - if he bats well against the Aussies in that match then it may just save his place for England! If he fails then (assuming KP is fit to play) I suspect that Compton will miss out!

I cannot for the life of me remember a Kiwi being in form for numerous games. I'm confined to the fact that our batsman are never in form.

Seriously, what else is there to do in Yorkshire on a Bank Holiday Monday? The attendance at this match has been abysmal.

I'm sure the ticket prices were cut today too. Tomorrow is only £5, but the forecast looks bad and no floodlights either

England may well win this tomorrow, but why take a risk on the weather?
If they had gone for it from the start of play, got 350 ahead and put NZ in before lunch this would be all over now. NZ were never going to score more than about 250, let alone the 450 Cook wanted.
I like Cook as a player, but he is very negative as a skipper.

league cricket.

Something Gloucestershire could learn from. Keep this day free (and any other bank holiday mondays) and then any cancelled or rain affected games can be re-arranged for these days etc.. that way more games are played etc etc.

I still can't get my head around Cook's tactics, if he had enforced the follow-on the match would be over now.

Better yo be safe than sorry. If NZ had posted 320 and given England a 140 target it could have become tricky with the fragility of the batting at the moment. The way Boult and Southee were bowling you never know if batting last. Better to secure the 1-0 and try for 2 than to gamble on winning the 2nd and giving NZ a chance.

I'm sure the pundits will have a field day dissecting Cook's tactics, but I don't think he has any questions to answer.
Clearly the follow on wasn't enforced because he didn't thing the score was big enough.
He batted on as long as he did for the same reason, winning the mind games by setting a total that was out of reach.
To keep that total out of reach he set what some might argue were negative fields, but there were no complaints from his bowlers. It actually showed great confidence in them being able to strangle the opposition out.
England have already won one test against NZ with a tremendous attacking bowling effort, but there are days when this won't come off.
Getting some practice in at working hard and chipping away is vital with the Ashes looming. You need a diverse arsenal at your disposal to win the longer series, and that weaponry needs to be honed to perfection.
When Australia were the dominant cricket force they time and again won from positions that seemed impossible. This England team is showing signs of being able to do that too. I think Cook is a canny skipper. Finding different ways to win is vital. Having experience in executing them is priceless.
