The key for me was that we won the toss and Cook made the right decision having done so.  Seriously - the biggest difference in that kind of low scoring match, especially with the majority of the movement being aerial, is that one side has to chase a total and is therefore under the mental pressure of knowing what is required rather than just going out and batting.  Broad bowled well on the final day - but if you analyse the wickets he took, only Rutherford got an unplayable ball and Fulton, Taylor and Williamson basically played rank bad shots.

In terms of England's batting, they miss Pietersen more than they would ever like to admit, as much as anything for his ability to dominate an attack.  As it stands, they have a top five who to one extent or another bat time and a number six who has had painfully little cricket in the last twelve months, added to which there are real questions over Compton's ability against top class bowling, Bell's temprament and Bairstow's readiness for test cricket...

In my opinion Prior is one of the best wicketkeeper/batsman in the world and should stay right where he is

I think recent collapses are still raw in NZ's minds.  When they see an innings going that way, as it did on the fourth day, there isn't any batsman who has the mental capacity to stick around.  They have the ability (Taylor, McCullum - Williamson looks good) but not the application at present.

Definitely a bowler's pitch - the scores prove that, so anyone who sticks around and scores runs on that is in good nick.  No real surprise that player was Root (and Trott to a degree).  He's been in great form, scoring runs for fun and showing it on the big stage.

I'm not overly concerned about our batting - early season, the ball is going to do a bit and all our players are proven.  I agree that it could be the start of a great summer for Broad.  There may be a correlation in him bowling well and batting well - definitely a confidence player...

I have no worries at all about Prior - he's simply too good to let that affect him!

The thing with Broad is, every time he runs through a side he does it on the back of pitching the ball up a yard on his normal length.  Why then is he unable to take that knowledge and bowl that length more often?

Forecast is good for the first 3 days play I think.

EDIT - seems to be a few showers forecast for today, but then no rain due in the next 3.

My money is firmly on a high scoring draw.

Due to not playing Sundays anymore, I've been watching todays play. We've down well today with Swann picking up some wickets!  Surprised that it looks like Cook has decided to bat again and not enforce the follow on...

Was surprised cook also did not enforce the follow on.
But looks like trott decided to have a extremely slow net.

personally I am not surprised the follow on wasn't enforced.
trott's batting was embarrassing.
