My 3lb+ Supremes
« on: May 11, 2013, 09:58:17 AM »

Hi guys,

This is my first post on this forum. I had bought these bats off Paul a couple of months or so ago, but I didn’t get around to writing up a review that I promised to do for Paul. I think Paul has already made a couple of posts on these bats a while back. I have never really done a bat review like this but I’ll do my best to write something half decent.

My initial specs were for two Supremes at 3lb 6oz and 3lb 8oz inclusive of two grips which I always use as I feel that helps with the balance of the bat (even after accounting for the additional weight of the grip). Both bats weigh a tad over 3.7 on my scale, which is fine by me as I have happy with a difference of plus or minus an ounce as a general rule. I still haven’t had a chance to knock them in and test them out so this is really still a first impressions review.

The bats balance beautifully, and probably feel more like a 3.4. In terms of dimensions, the edges are about 45mm and the spines about 70mm so they are quite huge, with the edge thickness running pretty much through the entire bat.

In terms of performance, they seem to ping as well as anything I have ever used. In the photos below I compare it with a CJI Fatso LE (Kashmir willow) that weigh 4lb 2oz and my Laver and Wood Special reserve (that is 3lb 11oz). So far I have never come across any bat that comes close to those in terms of how a ball pings off the bat – it is literally weightless. I don’t think I can give more praise to Paul’s bats than to say that the ball pings off the Supremes as well as those two bats (the Fatso being almost a pound heavier and the L&W being about 4 oz more).

Paul has already posted quite a few pictures of these bats on their own, so I thought it might be interesting to compare with some of my other bats. Below I am comparing it with my GN oblivion extreme at 3.3 (have a couple of other GNs that are bigger and heavier), the CJI Fatso and L&W, as well as a Stanford Limited Edition which is 2.10 (a more regular sort weight for a cricket bat). Apologies in advance for the not great images, these are from my phone.

Apart from the quality of bats themselves, I would have to say Paul’s service was fantastic. He started working on my bats the day after I made payment and had them done in a couple of days and posted soon after.

All in all, it was great to deal with Paul, and I’d be happy to recommend him to anyone. Also I wouldn’t have come across Paul if not for this forum, so hope you guys keep up the great work with this forum.

Cheers

Just a fraction bigger than 5'3 and 7 stone lol!! Not a professional bodybuilder or anything like that but the gym has been a passion of mine for a while. Have a bench, a power rack and a large set of free weights at the back of the house, and have always trained at home mainly (its also much cheaper than a gym over the long run if you have the space).

In terms of strength, I do squat and deadlift over 200 kg so I guess not too bad!

Have you ever used a more popular weighted bat?

Is there a particular reason why you use such a heavy bat?

trypewriter, thanks for the compliment mate  :)

Fasteddie, to answer your question, I didn't really have much of a clue about bat weights till the last couple of years or so. I used to buy the biggest bats I could find at the sports shops in Mumbai when I traveled to India, and as it turns out they usually weighed between 2.10 and 2.12 (e.g. the Sanford bat in one of those pictures above). I gradually started experimenting with heavier weights by actually buying some msr bats off ebay in the last couple of years (these ranged from 2.13 to 3.2 and later a couple of 3.6s), more so because I was very curious about heavier bats (and the msrs were cheap enough for me to experiment compared to cost of bats here in Australia and my experience with them was very good so I bought a few more). I was always under the impression before that anything over 3lb must be incredibly heavy as very few international players used them and they were usually made out to be too heavy for most people.

Long story short, I decided to experiment and found them to be well within my abilities. Basically from then I thought I would use the heaviest weight that I could which would not compromise my game. As it turned out with some more experimentation 3.6 seemed the ideal combination of a massive bat and a weight that I had no problems with. With bats this size I also found that I could get away with most shots and even hit yorkers for four (and also not worry about my bats snapping).

The Supremes here are a just a continuation of that theme and me pushing further to find out where I can go. Paul happened to be one of the few batmakers who explicitly mentioned a weight up to 3.6 for his bats (along with L&W), so I emailed him and asked if he could make something a tad heavier.

The fatso is definitely way too heavy to be used meaningfully in a match situation (in my opinion), but it was not too expensive and I just wanted to see what if felt like. The Laver is prob the max I will ever push, and that’s just because it’s a lovely bat and really well balanced. I have another Hunts county at that weight which is also an absolute monster (50mm+edges etc).

Let me know if you would like to know any more.

csnew, no probs mate, will post some in the next couple of days for you guys. From memory, that toe is over 50mm and is quite ridiculous (in an awesome kind of way)!

Blimey! There is some serious willow there! They are more like telegraph poles than cricket bats!
Do you play off the front foot most of the time? And do you actually manage to play any cut, pull or hook shots with that timber?

I am more of a front foot player definitely, but have no problems with shots off the back foot (e.g. back foot drives, cuts or late cuts). I don't really play the sweep too often and have never really played the pull and hook shots much even when I used much lighter bats - so I wouldn't attribute that to these bats and their weights (at least not yet) and more just to my playing style (and to be honest my inability so far to master those two shots).

Hopefully I will be able to spend some more time to work on those areas - they are definitely shots I would like to be able to play with confidence. I guess time will tell whether I have to go back to lighter weights in order to do so - but I think it’s more an issue of just being able to master those shots to a somewhat decent level equivalent to most of my other strokes. I can of course still play it off spinners or slow bowlers, but against decent medium pace or quicker, I'd just sway or duck under the ball if I can.
