too much caution
« on: June 09, 2013, 07:04:48 AM »

Had a game yesterday. We were 14/ 2 playing SM 40 in 2 overs. The pitch was really bad with odd one either keeping too low or just kicking off from good length. I went in and my Captain and I added another 53 cautious runs. So we were 67 in 16 overs. After having done all the hardwork we both got out playing ordinary shots. I was lbw. I got 16. In that 16 I got 2 fours and six. In hindsight when I think about it I was really checking my shots. It was an ordinary bowling attack and thought we gave too much respect. I played everything in the V consciously avoiding playing cut or pull. It is amazing how your thinking affects your game so much. I wish I sometimes had free spirit to just go out there and clear your head and see the ball and hit the ball.

I have now decided I will take on few more calculated risks especially after identifying the weaker links in the bowling attack.
Hopefully get a big score in the next one!!!

You'd think by playing it safe you'd be better off, but it can be counter productive.

a much better idea is to really work at rotating the strike and really ouching 1's and 2's. This will keep the scoreboard ticking over and also normally make the oppo captain think more so if they bring more close fielders in you have larger areas to hit into. As an opening bat thats what myself and my opeing partner try and do as much as possible.

If the bowling was ordinary but the score dictated that you shouldn't go crazy on an uncertain wicket, then I would have suggested that maybe one of you play cautiously whilst the other play more aggressively.
If both play cautiously then their ordinary bowlers would not be put under any pressure! So that's almost playing into their hands?

Having played a cautious innings of not many, don't you always think "I might as well have played some shots"?

I was the other guy(Captain :) ) to play with him in that game. I agree with one batsman taking a few risks but the bounce was unrealistic, one ball kept low to the ground and the other came chest height from the same length. Also the match had previous games effects on our mind, our middle order was crumbling to pressure in all our previous matches. This in mind we played very safe shots.

Precisely.. I felt at times we were just too careful...couple of hits and we would have made them to think..
