Visiting Kippax tomorrow
« on: July 16, 2013, 05:45:13 PM »

Hi everyone,
As the title suggests, I'm heading of to the Kippax workshop tomorrow morning. They're doing a deal for buy one get half price - works out to around £165 a bat which I think is great value. Dragging my brother along with me to take advantage of this :)

Called Kippax up today and discussed briefly with them what I can get made etc. They were very helpful and the chap seemed very knowledgable as well :) They said that oversized clefts are available (yay!). One thing to note is that they cannot make bats with higher than a 75mm spine due to their processes (maybe too big for their press?). I initially wanted a very very high spined bat ~80mm similar to a distinction or tempo or my own fusion sports bat so this made me rethink things a bit. But I'm very excited at the opportunity to pick up my own perfect cleft, so I'm not going to make this affect my decision (75mm is huge anyway right?).

After a bit of headwork I have come up with this possible profile:

I'm guessing to maintain these dimensions a fair bit of concaving has to be done. Don't really mind this because I love to have a pronounced spine running through the bat. What do you guys think? Think I'm being a bit unrealistic with the overall size for the weight?

Very excited. Will keep everyone posted how everything goes tomorrow.

The proper old school distinctions are around 70-75mm. This looks like a cross between an amplus and distinction. I think it's possible to get near that at 3lb in weight. Remember to take your camera and take some pics of clefts, bats etc if they allow.

The edge profile of this is actually very similar to the m&h master - thick toe, thick shoulders.
Btw anyone got feedback on their wavex handle?

Can't say I noticed anything special on the handle but they ate quite thin, or the one I had was.

Sorry for the late post guys! yup yup been to kippax and have put in an order for my own custom designed bat! :) All I can say willow willow everywhere. Theres soo much of it! Felt like a kid in a candy shop! Went upstairs to their "showroom" and they had some very very nice blades there. Particularly the colossus models were very tempting (until you see the £300 price tag!) - didnt check their weights, but very very light pick up and puts my blackcat joker to shame!

Then discussed with them what I wanted etc, and they were very accommodating to every request. I even brought in some handy drawings, and they correctly identified that the edge profile was very tendulkarish (I copied it from the m&h master - itself a copy of sachins). They even brought out some bats they had made to show whats possible with the weight etc. A particular bat they brought out had certain initials stamped in and it was destined for an England international- maybe we'll see it at lords? ;) It was 2'13 btw, no concaving, just a big big piece of wood.

After alot of talking settled on these final specs:
3lbs
SH Normal sized blade
12 straight grains all sapwood- They basically said whatever you want be it 7 grains or 16 grains sapwood/heartwood, they can find it for me. With all the stock they have I'm not surprised! Don't think the normal bespoke manufacture is spoilt for choice like this?
Semi Oval Wavex handle. They assured that the tech behind wavex was very sound and talked me into it. Apparently KP used to swear by them...and GM have been trying to buy the patents for it from them for years.
40mm edges
75mm spine
They even said they might not have to concave it that much to achieve those specs due to the relatively heavier weight im going for.
Heres a drawing of the side/front profiles of the bat requested. Each small square is 10mm^2. Interesting to see if they can match this!

One issue I'm having is their stickers! The green "Kippax" ones look very tacky! (looks like floro green puke IMHO) The red "wavex" one is a bit more understated because of the colour... still wayy too loud for me. I'm thinking of requesting it blank! Are there any batmakers that offer stickers for sale?

In all my excitement I completely forgot to take any photos:(. Im revisiting them sometime next week (or the following) to collect the bat and will remember to do so then!

I actually quite like the retro kippax stickers, but that's because I can remember them from back in the day when they were all over the local leagues!

Just request it blank, you can easily design stickers yourself on something as simple as MS Publisher, any local printing firm will do you a laminated A4 sheet for about £5.

Truly disappointed by the service. Almost a month after I first ordered (they said they'll get the bats to me in a few days) they still haven't finished work on them. The communication has been absolutely one way and made me feel like I was troubling them every time I called them up. Called them up again today - told me on saturday they would be finished today. Surprise surprise for the umpteenth time I hear "should be done by the end of the week!" - ive been hearing the same thing for the past three weeks so shouldve known better. Waiting longer I'm okay with but they decided to spring another surprise on me. "Apparently" theyve spent quite a lot of time on the bats and now they are not going to be £220 but £300 a piece. I was VERY clear on that day that I want a £220 bat and not one made from of there £300 colossus clefts as I cannot afford that. Can they even do this? They're now saying its a mix up with the prices and its always £300 for such a bespoke bat and telling me to take it or leave it. They also tried to make a story about me changing the spec on the bat a few times and them having to rejig the machine every time? (I did initially ask for a shorter blade then told them normal sized blade about an HOUR after I ordered it - since it been 4 weeks since then and they still haven't finished the bat I'm calling BS on that). I think they have a great set up there with the willow and all that but the customer service for me has been abysmal. I went there with very high hopes and was very excited and I'm leaving with a very cold feeling. Hope they don't treat every other customer like this for there own sake. /Rant Over

P.S would love to hear their thoughts on this as they are a forum sponsor.

Do you have any form of paper work showing that you selected the 220 bat? If so then I can't see them arguing with that.
