Hard-pressed TT
« on: August 19, 2013, 12:57:00 PM »

Hi all,

I've bought a 5* TT of Paul from IJC and love the balance and pickup but it still seems pretty hard. As Paul has mentioned to me the 5* bats are generally made of harder wood than the players/sps models, but I'd like to know if anyone else has had experience of this, and how long did it take for your bat to soften up, if it did at all?

I love the bat, just worried it's not going to ping as much as I thought.

Thanks,

James

Get working in that bat with a mallet, with some decent use it'll go like a rocket before long.
That was my mates experience anyway

Was thinking the same thing but Paul's already knocked it in for me - A few sessions on the bowling machine perhaps?

If its already knocked in using it is your best bet, few hours in the nets required for you  ;)

A few hours in the nets batting - Ok then, if I have to! (arm twisted just a little bit)

Softening is not what makes a bat ping.

I have a 5star from the Thruxton offer and it pings straight away, I have knocked mine in for about an hour just nnedges and toe and used in the nets and it flies.

You'll find that they play in a little longer than the Players and the SPS models, but they don't take too long at all. I would say a couple of net sessions, they generally go well from the start, it's just that they don't feel quite as nice. I'm sure a couple of net sessions then knocking in the parts which don't feel as nice should be do the trick!

What you are actually want is for the surface to become harder than the underbelly. Apparently.

That's going to be one hard surface then  ;)

I'm sure it'll be fine - I've had a few bats mellow out and become belters after a few net sessions.

Is this down to Newbery pressing SPS, Players and 5* models differently?

Or will it be the individual piece of willow?

i thought they were all pressed individually and then graded on looks/performance?

Well, took my TT to the nets tonight and I needn't have worried - the bat is an absolute belter!

It may have sounded hard off the mallet, but the middle is long and wide and felt great. The balance is perfect and the pickup is a dream = one happy chappie!!!

Just goes to show that things aren't always as they seem ;)
