Had a good year in my 1st official year as elected 1st team captain (having inherited it towards the end of last year whilst on honeymoon!)

We set our stall out early with winter nets that as a squad we wanted to push for promotion and i asked our level 2.5 coach to take on a winter nets programme to change our approach from what we have done for the last 5+ years. Feedback was positive and everyone at the club said how enjoyable they were. Going into the season we had picked up a couple of good players which helped to strengthen the squad.

I wont drag it out too much but we only lost 2 games out of the 15 we completed that were entirely down to us performing badly with the bat. We secured promotion to the WEPL with 2 games to spare which is the 1st time in the clubs 135 year history we have ever achieved it. Fantastic to do this as a club and as a 1st XI it spurred the 2nd XI onto winning their league in the last game of the season as well.

As captain its never an easy task to handle field positions/bowling changes and mental arithmetic of how many overs what bowler has left at what end to add upto 45! Im not an opening batsmen and my bowling days are behind me so i tend to float anywhere between 4-8 depending on whats required.

Wrapped up the Saturday season with 388 runs at an average of 48.5 according to play cricket and a total of 776 @ 45.65 overall in all games. Sundays have been a challenge as a lot of time and energy goes into Saturdays games and with work its cricket 24/7 anyway!!

Onto next Season and a new challenge, not before what could prove to be a rather busy winter on the work front and hopefully some time to try out my new golf clubs at some stage.

Pleased you got promoted mate - we have managed to stay up I believe (think the WEPL have confirmed that), and hope they allow you to go up (cant see why not).

On a personal note had a pretty good season on Saturday and Sunday - topped off by scoring a ton in the last game of the season, when we needed 41 off the last 2 overs and I hit a 4 off the last ball to get the win and my ton.  Happy days!!

Care to share what the winter nets comprised of mate? It clearly worked!

On a personal note my season was ok I guess with 334 at an average of 25.69. Slight improvement on last year but should have been more really and got too many starts without going on to make a big score. Frustratingly missed both games against bottom of the league!
Keeping was ok, but disappointingly bust a finger towards the end of the season and couldn't keep at the end.

Clubwise our 1s and 2s both won their divisions and our 3s came second in theirs so promotions allround in a very successful season. Was also nice to have such decent weather after last year!

Managed to hit William Hill bookies, a garage door and nearly a bus so was quite entertaining!!!!

Glad it got sorted as I did hear a rumuor that you were not going up, but thought that strange given they promoted Bristol Asians a few years back!!!  Session on for both games then...

Having started the year as a Bowler who bats a bit my knee troubles have caught up with me leading me to concentrate more on my batting. 906 runs later this season with 2 tons (one of which was my first ever) and 6 50's at an average of 50.33 and I'm starting to wonder why I ever bothered steaming in and destroying my knees in the first place. A few more games this season to reach the magic 1000, hopefully I can get there!

Top season all round then mate which is great to see of the local boys.

I asked Colley to put together a plan that involved more than just sending someone into a net for 10 mins and having people bowl at them whilst they thrash away at the majority of it.

As a result we ended up batting in pairs and every third ball you either ran a single or a 3 depending on how many you had faced. This meant strike was rotated more realistically to a game situation and your heartbeat was going as well after running a few singles/3's to replicate what your likely to have to deal with when in the middle.

Got a right old sweat on for everyone but people seemed to enjoy it. Towards the last few sessions we also implemented that once you were out that was you done and you came out of the net until everyone else was either out or the time was up. This got people batting properly and putting a value on their wicket and time in the net for their £4 for the session too.

Thanks for sharing Tom. Seems like a good idea and fairly easy to implement so will try to have a go at that approach at our nets this year too.

606 Saturday league runs this year at 40.4 so not bad but I'm not happy with it as I only scored the bulk of my runs against the good teams but kept getting out cheaply against the worst teams! Defo need to concentrate more.

Overall I'm on 1855 for the season but again, some wasted chances again this year which I look on with regret.

Things to work on is concentrating more to aim for more runs against the lesser bowlers and not gift my wicket away, get fitter again and aim to push the team upthe WEPL leagues.

Best bit of kit is my RPC, it's a cannon!!

How did you judge catches? I know some who would just hit it in the air and say 'that wont be caught' etc etc

Majority rule if a % of people said out their verdict stood even if the batsmen argued the usual "that would have cleared cover"

Agreed - most leagues stipulate that you have to have played before 1st August to be eligible for last few games as it stops ringers coming in for the last few games (like you are doing)...

My club finished 3rd from bottom of thier division so just avioded relegation. We did make it to the Somerset cup final at Taunton which was an excellent boost for the club. We are now having an EGM to put together a 3 year plan for senior cricket and get the club back up the pyramid system where we were 10 years ago.

Personally I averaged 70 from 10 league innings but the standard is not fantstic.

Looking forward to next season and being more competitive.
