It's not that bad. Unless Paul raises the price by �100 (which I doubt) they are still amazing value cricket bats! Will be getting one of the new shapes next year! I am such a fan with the pressing and the bats look amazing. I did a boo boo and knocked in the edges and it has got a bit lumpy (not an issue because it will look a hell of a lot worse when I start playing matches with it) so will refurb this through Paul knowing it will come back better than new!

Just keep lightly going up and down the edges with the mallet the edges will even out with patience. You did the right thing just a bit too vigorous to start with by the sounds of it

People get hung up on the image of a bat it's shape logos profile etc but at the end of the day it's down to performance in my eyes so we try and make every bat with that in mind. The cosmetics of the bat are just the icing on the cake

Ps would the performance match more expensive bats with the difference just being the grading of the willow?

Batman. Good question that one. Sometimes with the grade 3 bats yes as a lot of them are graded because they have marks on them or discolouration or just very few grains but they perform superbly. Some are graded down because they just don't perform to what we want from our other grades but obviously that is just the nature of the wood itself. But as I have said before we try and get the maximum out of every cleft that we have in

Paul I would be very interested in some of those bats that perform like grade 1 but for cosmetic reasons are classed as grade 2/3. If you have anything like that please email it through to me.

I think these are his Silver sovereigns and at �125 I think it was that's a very reasonable price for the quality that he produces

I hope Paul won't mind me relaying what he told me in conversation, which was that he assesses each individual cleft then presses it accordingly to get the best out of it throughout his range. With the best will in the world I can't imagine the high volume manufacturers doing that, except perhaps for some of their very top dollar bats.

We are changing it a little next year. We are going to make all4 grades available player, grade 1,2 and 3 in every range. We have introduced a couple of new shapes so the silver sov will be taken down to bespoke junior bats then we will have gold sovereign, supreme and our new range yet to be launched waiting for all the stickers to be done plus in every range we are re introducing the old butterfly stain willow which was so popular in the 90s and were fantastic bats when made properly. So quite a hit happening busy times at the moment and my new willow will be in any day now.
Also we are experimenting with handles so that's keeping us busy too

Yes that's right it took along time to teach myself the pressing process that works best for me. That's the beauty of having a single roller press I suppose as you can only do one cleft at a time, but you still need to learn to assess it and keep testing it. As I just work on my own I can only go as fast as I can go so everything is individual even if I start making for shops I can only keep trying to turn out the best that I can as it is that that is creating my livelihood so they have got to be good. I intend to be here for the duration if I can not just a 2 minute wonder.

Paul, I'm sure you haven't everything set in stone yet but how will the bats with butterfly stain fit in price wise?

All being well they are going to fit in a mid range sort of price I reckon. Everything selected in the butterfly range are pretty much close grained so will have great looks and generally butterfly stains have a longer life. They take a touch longer to knock in and open up but performance is brilliant from what I experienced with them. Am looking forward to working with them
