Swann didn't turn world class and cement his place in the england team til he was gone 30. These guys all have a lot more time.

If you're going to be putting a spinner at number 8, I'd rather see Borthwick than Ali. SB is a full time spinner who's batting has come on heaps, and has always been seen as a prospect, not to mention he bowls leg spin which gets everybody a little excited!
He's no longer a full time spinner. He rarely bowls any more, he's seen as a number 3 batsman who can possibly bowl if none of the 5 seamers make a dent in the opposition. I'd love to have seen Wainwright given a gig but it won't happen now he's at Derbyshire, too unfashionable a county. Rashid is in a similar position, his batting has improved exponentially but his bowling has dropped off. Kerrigan, regardless of his debut, is surely the long-term prospect, although I would like to see Rafiq at Yorks pushed on a bit. Mooen could also do a job, if a number 3/4 was needed in the future who could bowl spin then he would fit in well.

Being a Worcester lad I'd love to see Moeen given a shot, decent enough spinner and can certainly bat!

I'm pretty sure Kerrigan will end up being the option though, young lad with a good amount of potential - just need to make sure he's developed properly and not overused (Flintoff being a prime example...)

kerrigan as he deserve another chance after that performance in the last test, maybe ali as he can bat and bowls at a part time bowler and root can bowl more overs

As a left armer David Wainwright would be behind Monty, but he is a better fielder and batsman - not such great bowling stats though, and not at a fashionable county.

and he is a similar type of bowler to Keedy and Kerrigan - the type who sort of walk up and put it there, which tends to be an issue when you get to test match wickets.

Short term, they'll go with Panesar or play seven batsmen with the seventh being Ali - this might allow them to have a look at him in the Sri Lanka tests, where the four seamers will do most of the work.

Longer term, Rafiq is probably the best bet, though I would love to see one of Rashid or Borthwick on their bowling to give us a wrist spin option.

I'd like to see rashid have a crack.  I saw him in the nets a while back and was impressed,  he can also give the ball a good crack.

Be nice if he did, be nice to have someone in the year below me in school in the test team. He's a top lad too!

I always think left arm off spin adds something a little different to the side. Change in angle etc. Seems like we lack quality left arm over.
