Who will be England's next spinner?
« on: December 22, 2013, 12:22:26 PM »

Wondered what people's though were on who will be England's next long term spinner. I'm sure it will be Monty for now, but long term? Borthwick, Kerrigan, Briggs, Tredwell? Personally I've always rated Adil Rashid but his bowling doesn't seem to have kicked on enough although he'd add a lot to the depth in the batting line up. Moeen Ali would make a great no.8 and is a more than able spinner but that's highly unlikely to happen. Who would you go for?

The other young lad at Yorkshire - Rafiq? Certainly about to enter a fair transition period over the next 12-18 months with a number on there way out. Fast forward to the next Ashes series and it'll be a fairly different squad

You have to wonder how long the Swann retirement / injuries have been a Issue with the Kerrigan experiment.

As a left armer David Wainwright would be behind Monty, but he is a better fielder and batsman - not such great bowling stats though, and not at a fashionable county.

If you're going to be putting a spinner at number 8, I'd rather see Borthwick than Ali. SB is a full time spinner who's batting has come on heaps, and has always been seen as a prospect, not to mention he bowls leg spin which gets everybody a little excited!

Don't think there's a world class spinner in the UK? All steady but not world beaters ...

True, but how often do you see them on wickets offering a bit of help?

Never. Because if a spinner takes too many wickets the ECB fine the club...

I'd prefer to see a spinner picked because of their bowling rather than if they can add a bit of depth at 8.

Fair point but would anyone have said swann was "world class" before he got his run in the team?
