End of Linseed Oil
« on: January 15, 2014, 12:03:51 PM »

Currently reading Ed Smith's book, 'On and Off the Field' detailing his 2003 year as a pro.

I couldn't find the thread dedicated to it but Gilchrist mentioned that pro's do not use linseed oil anymore (a decade ago), thought I would just add this section from the book...

I'm guessing that's because they change bats so frequently there's no point?
Maybe some scuff guard & toe protection at most?
Sponsors are on-hand to give them as many bats as they can eat, what's the point in oiling it and trying to preserve it for as long as possible when they're only going to use it for part of a season?

Funny how some pro's grow very attached to certain bats (e.g. Michael Clarke and his Spartan) but yet will not do much to preserve the bats.

Just a thought  :-[

Surely in order to use the same bat for a prolonged period he must've been doing something the keep them together. Clarke used those horrid suff sheets if i remember rightly.

Linseed oil deadens the ping.

I have not used it in five years.

If you want some moisture, spread some baby oil lightly on the back of your bat.

Scuff sheet on the front is all you need.

It has not been used by pros (generally) for at least three decades.

Wow I didn't know oiling a bat has an impact on the ping.

Baby oil is for a different kind of wood mate!

They don't really. They grow attatched to favourite bats.

Is it only on the face that it can affect ping?

And is it any appliance of Linseed Oil or only if over applied causing oil rot?

Right - as mentioned elsewhere, unless you massively over oil the bat there will be no impact on bat performance. In my view there is a load of tosh being spouted here

Oil will protect against rot, not cause it. That is what it does!!
