I've recently relocated, and while I'm happy to do the hour and a bit drive back to my old club for this season at least, there may come a time when I need to find a more local club. However, I'm wary of what sort of club to try - it seems to easy to overestimate your own ability and potentially look at a fool at the first net - which can be an awkward experience anyway.

new area, try 4 or 5 different clubs of varying standards. That way you can find the one that most suits what you want out of your cricket. Some people live for the 'I play ECB Prem cricket'.. Some are more interested in getting to open the batting or bowling each week regardless of form and choose div 345.

Higher you go, the more 'pressure' there is because they expect you to score runs, take wickets etc. So moving a div or two lower maintains the general standard but lessens the pressure to perform week in week out, hopefully leading to a more enjoyable game for yourself. after all, that's what amateur cricket is about.

I moved to my current club about 5 years ago and have loved every minute of it. Previous club (where I was a colt and played a bit of adult cricket after a break between 19-25) were going backwards, had been relegated 5 years in a row and just accepted relegation before the season had started. Their once thriving colts section now didnt exist and the club really was on its last legs so I decided to move to the closest team to them.

Since i have its been great, made some really great mates and now have a great place to go along and play cricket and socialise. Its really worked out for me.

So for this year I am now captaining the 5's at my club and we are now in the league as my old club's first team. I still know quite a few of the lads at my old club so it should be an interesting two games. When we play them at home its my birthday as well so I'm hoping to celebrate by smashing them

Moving clubs ?  this was my dilemma having been approached to captain a local clubs 4Th team this season I was tempted because i would not have to travel to home games but loyalty stopped me due to 2 seasons ago my then club ( who i had played for for 25 seasons ) brought in 12 new players which led to me  and other older club members not getting a game and i was ready to pack in playing if the club I now play for had not come in for me.

Seriously considering changing clubs as I now have a 'commute' of over an hour to a home game! Problem being that a change in club would potentially mean a move to the Chilterns League - has anyone played in the league before and/or know what the standard is like? I was playing TVL div 4 last season. I could stay in TVL but not sure the club in the village I live in would be the most socialable of clubs and I like to have a beer or 2 after a game of cricket!

Taplow would be the club I would join. Have you played against them before? Decent/socialable bunch of lads? Will be netting there next week for first time.

Taplow is a nice setup. Only played there once in an October game (on an unbelievable dry track). Don't know much about the lads their but one of our (Marlow) best players started at Taplow - Graeme Paskins, ex Bucks keeper. You can't be far away from Marlow actually - great track, ground, 3 teams and a chance to play Div 4 or higher.

Yeh it's a shame as I was looking forward to it. Enjoyed my only trip to Hurst, even if we got our proverbial handed to us on a plate, and a great bunch of lads to boot.

I'm living in Burnham now, about a 5 minute drive from the ground.

why not in Oct?? It's not cold in Oct at all, in fact, in the last few years it's been nice weather and the wickets are usually still decent. Why rush to finish the season!!

well the track we played on looked so bare it could of been in Asia but they were taking singles to cover because nobody fancied wading through the paddy field developing on the rest of the square. It's can be an interesting experience. Up in Yorkshire at Arthington, they play until late October. Up their it's either nice or bloody awful, no half measures on the weather front.

I've just signed for the biggest club in my area, for their 2s which is a big step up, I held my own in pre-season nets but the bowling was noticeably better.
I've been made to feel very welcome which is ace, and we had our first match yesterday - I was bowled out for 6 to one that nipped back a tiny bit but an inch off the deck. Am gutted I didn't  get a dream start, but that's when the hard work starts!
