Keyhole meniscus repair
« on: March 20, 2014, 07:48:24 PM »

Just returned home from a relatively straight forward keyhole jobby on my right knee. In and out in a few hours.

Has anyone had this op and can tell me approx recovery periods?

I was never a big runner between the wickets and I'm happy at first slip ;-)

Week's rather than months. I've had it twice on my left knee as well as the main surgery between 1998 and 2002.

Was it meniscus or cartlidge? Were you walking post op? Are you on crutches? Weight baring?

If it's just a meniscus clean up then just a few weeks so you'll be fine by May. If it's cartlidge and you are non weight baring then basically you are out for the season.

Sounds promising then. Don't want to miss too much cricket. Did you need the second op due to further wear and tear or is it common to need more than one op?

A meniscus tear with cysts apparently. Don't yet know whether it was repaired or just cleaned out, the surgeon didn't hang around to discuss it with me, guess I'll find that out at a follow up appointment. I would imagine a meniscus removal would cause more issues?

I ruptured my cruciate in 98.I don't want to worry you but this was the turn of events. I was misdiagnosed for months before they first went in. I finally had keyhole late 98 all went well for a few months was told I was ok to resume football then my knee give way proper again.I had major surgery in 2000 on it.Was basically in rehab mode for 9 months. My knee collapsed again whilst walking home from work.Luckily a passing motorist saw me stranded and took me home.Went back in hospital in 2001 for further keyhole and touch wood its been fine since. I agree you don't get to spend enough time with the surgeon so you kind of feel in limbo.I do remember being told at physio the 3rd time that if all went well id be able to play the last 2 month of the season and I had the op late January. There should be a ward named after me at the hospital as im in there so much.haha

Recovery time for a meniscus tear is around12 weeks  then physio but it depends where in the knee the tear is as the outer edge of the meniscus has some blood vessels but the area in the centre has no direct blood supply. Also as the miniscus covers the top of the tibia and acts as a shock absorber if it is removed you would be left with bone against bone.

You have hydroline cartlidge surrounding the bones (this allows them to slide easy) and the meniscus acts as a shock absorber. If you losr that fibro cartlidge then yes, you will wear away the hydroline cartlidge and then you'll have bone on bone... Aka arthritis and a world of pain.

3 months usual recovery time for keyhole but surgeon will confirm at follow up.

Had keyhole to repair torn cartilage which is a relatively simple procedure.

Depends what you have done. Simple fibro cartlidge (meniscus) is short echo dry as it's not serious.. Something like micro fracture, coi replacement etc is loooong term,.

Harris for example will probably have micro fracture.. So will be layed up for 4 months, then back about 6 months (pro timings - add another 4 onto each for us normal bods)

Cheers for all the responses. I've lived with the pain for a few years and only did anything about it as it was waking me up in the night when the cysts were catching.

I'm on my feet and can bend it but I think the tight bandage is offering a lot of support.

It's amazing how the thoughts of looking after your own body go out the window when all you want to do is get back on a cricket field.

I had a miniscus tear sorted by keyhole in 2005. Out for a few weeks.
Just had an MRI on the same knee, same symptoms, thankfully no tear.

First slip and hitting boundries washed down with lots of tramadol should get you back soon.

Good luck.

Careful with a bandage which pushes your knee cap into the joint. That can cause friction and excessive wear.

I try and book my back surgeries for the autumn. All winter to recover.

I had hoped that the NHS would be true to reputation and take six months to offer me an appointment, it was more like 2 weeks so bit the bullet.

I've never dealt in singles anyway and only bowl dollies off a step or two. Just a shame I'm rather portly!
