The good and the bad
« on: March 30, 2014, 12:54:28 PM »

Had a net this morning on the bowling machine and wasn't that great in all honesty, but I filmed it and I'm not going to edit out the bad bits. So here you go, some good, a lot bad.

Just out of interest do you get bowled a lot outdoors?

Your back toe seems to be on/outside leg stump and stays completely static.  Then your front foot goes at the ball.  Just seems like a bowled/snick off could be fairly common.  Could imagine you score fairly quickly though!  :-[

With driving, why would keeping your back foot still make you vulnerable to being bowled?

Because there are three stumps pretty visible at all times.  If I bowled away swing and pitched one on or about middle I'd fancy a bowled! Tbf I only watched one minute of it though.

Oh ok, you mean a static foot outside leg stump. Thought you just meant a still Blackfoot in general.

I never understand why getting out LB is supposed to be better than being out bowled. Or vice-versa.

Lb is to me worse than getting bowled as you've not only missed it but you've got your foot in the wrong place too. Least bowled you've only made one mistake, missing the ball :(

Caught is bad though.. Keep it on the deck.

Don't get bowled often if I play a proper shot. I'm on/outside leg here because it's hard to mark a guard in these nets, normally I bat on 2.

So simply don't get caught, don't get LBW and don't get bowled - if only it were that easy!

Some people change their guard toward leg to avoid being an 'LBW candidate'? Are they not now simply more of a 'bowled candidate'?

Hello Colesy,

Your technique looks good. You look nice and compact at the crease with a nice high back lift and solid head position while playing your shots.  You also look controlled and balanced in your shot making. I would guess you are a top order batsman maybe opener? Your technique seemed to improve in the third video when the speed of the bowling was increased. My impression anyway.

If I would criticize anything I would say you could work on getting behind the line of the ball some more as that would help you time some of your drives better. You also seem to premeditate some of your shots which is probably due to a bit of boredom with the repetitive nature of bowling machines. Apart from the second video where you seemed to be goofing around a bit there was a lot more good than bad on show here.

Thanks for the comments TopShot. I have a tendency to premeditate, or want to hit the ball in a certain area when I'm comfortable with the pace which doesn't help me really. I do open and have done for a few years but I see myself as more middle order hitter as a long innings isn't my strong point as you may have guessed haha.

I'm strong on the cover drive but at the moment I seem to try and hit balls on middle/middle and leg straight which leads to an in to out looking shot and sometimes spooned to cover. This is the main issue I'm trying to work on before the season. I back myself on the pull and cut but having not used these nets for a while I forgot it skids through and I should've had it pitched a bit shorter for those shots rather than played off of a length.

Some of the shots, the fuller pitched video was toward the end of the net where I wanted to practice hitting balls Yorker length for t/20 situations so the moving around the crease was a bit to do with that.

Hopefully I'll be able to net and upload another video soon and would be good to compare the two.

No problem at all Colesy.

Your technique is well suited to top order batting. From your high elbow driving to the economy of motion in the way your hands maneuver the bat to the ball. The talent is obvious.

Premeditation is an issue for all batsmen. Concentration and patience are probably your best ways around it. Playing each ball on its merit is a good mantra to have while at the crease. (Easy to say hard to do)

I would like to see a video of your back foot play just to see of it is as solid as your front foot work.
