I I got given a Kookaburra Blade to clean up by a friend.

The bat has a hairline crack near the handle that runs vertically down the grain on the front face, but on the back its heading towards the splice. If I apply a bit of pressure on opens slightly.

I'd love to get some pva in there but it's not wide enough and I'm worried it will open up like a set of the chopsticks Japanese restaurants give you!

I reackon another hit could do the same due to the massive concaving all the way down the edge of the kooka.

Would you:

A. Leave it alone.

B. Tape or bind it

C. Open it and glue.

I'm thinking B. But would like to do C but how do I this without the crack travelling south?

ideally you need some glue in there, maybe some diluted pva, if you have a syringe you could pump some into it which wont need massive amount of opening. and then tape it super tight, it will break again but may salvage for a brief period in time

I thought that might be the answer. I just brought this off ebay to give it a go. Hopefully I can get the needle in the crack and let pressure do the rest.

Well I got the bottle and it worked a treat at getting slightly watered down pva deep into the crack. Took a fair bit of pressure to open the crack enough and even though I could not get the needle into the crack the glue went exactly where I aimed and the penetrated deep into the crack.

Anyway here are the fix and before and after pics of the bat. Nice Bat.

Is that a crack through the back of the blade or just cracks in the stickers?

Just cracks in the stickers. The crack was definitely isolated to the shoulder.

Wouldnt hurt putting some fibreglass tape around the shoulders to hold the crack in place and prevent it breaking as soon as it gets a ball hit on it

I'd hate to tell you this but that's a crack at the bottom of your splice (on the back), I've seen it a few times, no point in removing the stickers or anything as it's not repairable.

Right at the moment the bat feels pretty good too. Maybe I'll give it the 'Needle'!

Seriously though I'll show him the thread and let him start saving for a Aldred, B&S, B3 or any of the other great bat makers on the forum.

Seen it on a couple of kookas, a GN, my own Hunts County when i was younger. I wouldn't say it is brand specific.

I'm sure he can find a great bat from one of us on the forum

I have found that this generally happens when it is fitted and the spliced area is too thick and the vibrations through the bat start to move the handle and then the cracks appear and becomes unrepairable.

My woodworm satellite went that way, no way of repairing it as has been stated, but you could have some fun.

Put some brass screws in the crack so it isn't going to go anywhere and plane the edges down to make a training bat!
