My point is that where a company cuts out the retailer and the fact that the retailer needs to make a margin to offer you a service, of course direct operations can offer lower prices - albeit they seek to make much bigger margins.

Kind regards

Edward

Oh I see, so your bats cost £500 because both you and your retailers need to make a profit on the item. A customer can go direct to a small brand and get a players grade bat for half that price. I wonder if the advice to a customer from one of your retailers (which the customer is paying part of the premium for) would be not to buy a £500 bat because they don't need one to improve their game, or that they can get much better value elsewhere? Probably not.

The question remains who needs a £500 cricket bat? What standard should you be playing at before a £500 bat will make a difference to your game?

Nobody needs one, many people want one. Some of those who want one are lucky enough to be able to buy one. It's a simple as that really, if there wasn't a market for such a bat, they wouldn't be on sale.

The same argument applies to the G3/butterfly bats you are talking about. Why should I spend £100 on one when a Kashmir bat for £20 does the same job?

Your question is a fairly dumb one though. You can spend £3,500 on a watch, when a £25 one will tell the time and be just as accurate and probably last as long.

Likewise, you can spend £120k on a car or 16, and both will get you from a to b.

Why do bats get offered at this price? Because somewhere out there someone wants to buy them. It may not be you, but if someone wants to buy something they perceive as a bit special, why shouldn't they spend a load of their cash on it?

A 500 quid bat, or a 1000quid bat will never make a difference to your game. Of you think it will, or expect it to for someone, you need to have your head tested.

A 500 quid bat is a status symbol, and nothing more. And they will sell as people want to say "look at my joe roots players edition"

Not quite right - I'm sure there will be some small statistical gain attributable to increase self esteem/confidence arising from the perception that you have the best possible tools for the job, and you may get a further small boost from the very best clefts available*, but we are talking very, very small margins here.

* though the wierd thing with Players Editions is that, because they are made to the individual players specifications, the ones I have seen tend to be oddly weighty on the pick up, which goes to show that the top players don't all agree with most members on here that a feather light 2lb 8 is the only way to go!

I think it would like Manormanic said. It would give you a boost in confidence when playing  shots.

I Personally don't Believe in placebos.

But then I don't believe there is such thing as a "players" bat for sale. The ones that are, seem to generally be bats made for a pro, that he has turned down.
They make him 10 bats he takes the best 5(in his opinion) the last 5 go on sale.
They are rejects, although the very best of the rejects.

If I pro's rejects give you confidence, then I doubt your actually that good at cricket.

Go spend the money on coaching instead.

Given the vast wealth of evidence that supports the existence of the placebo effect, I'm tempted to ask whether you also believe the world to be flat, or JFK to have been assassinated by aliens?

Show me the evidence/results/research that show placebos are 100% effective! and I'll show you the evidence to prove the aliens are guilty.

even a bullet to the brain is not 100% effective; there is nontheless a massive weight of research which you are free to google demonstrating the validity of the effect.

I'd have to agree with Manormanic on this one. There is a rather large swathe of evidence that demonstrates the effectiveness of Placebos. No, they aren't 100% effective, but neither are cricket helmets...

Drugs that hAve been approved for use don't have 100% affectiveness. Ebola doesn't kill 100% of people that get it.

gone off topic abit. Maybe admin could split it to keep the gm one on track.

"500quid bat vs coaching. What will improve your game more" is an appropriate topic title.
