Question for the bat makers/experts
« on: September 12, 2014, 12:30:12 AM »

Hi, recently purchased a bat, which is pretty special! However, upon closer inspection, I found these little cracks all over the inside edge and was wondering if anyone could tell me why this happens? It's brand new, not faced a ball, and I doubt it was damaged in transit, as it goes all the way up the inside edge! Oh, and it's a GM Argon F2 Original Limited Edition. :)

And the face. Really nice, but pretty average for an OLE! (I really like the 7 very even grains, but shouldn't really have those blemishes!)

Not sure what it could be, but maybe due to the drying of the cleft? The bat was kept in a plastic bag and sealed with a rubber band, so doubt that it's due to moisture loss during storage. Maybe heat damage? Really gutting, as it's under 2.10, has a PI of 2, and is probably about as affordable as an OLE is ever going to get for me!

Cheers in advance!

Hard to tell from the pictures but it looks a lot like the cross fracturing you get on the face when you knock a bat in hard or after it's been used for a while. If it's just running across don't worry. If it's making a U shape and starting to pull away get your local bat maker or the GM boys to take a look.

That's the thing, it's brand new, and hasn't faced a ball! Yes, I used a mallet it on, but only gently to test the responsiveness, so it can't have been that! Also goes all the way up to near the shoulder, so could it possibly be pressing cracks? May just return it, but it is a lovely bat!

Here are some more pictures. If you look closely enough, you can see it runs all the way up to the 'GM' sticker near the shoulder.

I've just got 2 bats, 2 pairs of gloves & a pair of pads for that and could afford to go down the pub with change!  ;)

That looks like a compression crack i used to see it quite a lot when quality clefts were around more in non professional cricket.

Really? They go all the way up the inside edge, but the outside edge seems flawless. Only conclusions are that it could be due to pressing, perhaps one side of the cleft was drier than the other, (Happens dependent on what way the cleft faces when air dried outside) maybe one side was left stored next to a radiator or it was during the GM knocking process... What exactly does a compression crack suggest?

It is a big 2.10 bat, with a toothpick handle! Will most likely add another grip on top, I rarely ever double grip but this is thin even for me! Using anything between 2.9-2.12, as long as it picks up well!
