JVS HMX- issues and repair
« on: September 30, 2014, 04:22:53 AM »

Hello all,

A few weeks ago i posted a couple weeks back of the follow up review of the JVS HMX signature bat i received,
It was with great sadness that the said bat broke last week while training. The photos speak for themselves

This image shows where the toe guard as been removed to investigate the state of the crack

I have attempted to fix this bat which may be fruitless but worth a crack as it is a cracking stick
AS it broke in a variety of places i have fixed it in stages

It still has some way to go as i have to address the face next and the giant crack down the centre of the blade,

I have glued the edge and got it to sit flush but for how long it lasts and if it performs is a mystery

Will have some more photos later on this evening,

Is a bizarre break and i have never seen something like this, most of the damage all went at once,

Was very weird as i hit the ball out of the middle and cannoned off and looked down to a shattered masterpiece.
This is now 5 bats in 3 weeks broken

My last Lekka bat broke in a similar fashion, in that it had about a season's use and then cracked up the middle of the blade. It was a cracking bat, but I know it was Pakistan made, and I suspect had a lower than average moisture content.

I just binned it as once it had cracked, you could feel that the middle was gone. Looks a good attempt at a repair but I wonder whether you'll get the middle back given the damage location.

The middle is going to be the determining factor.

I have just sanded it back and it look like i have sealed most of the cracks.
I am taking it to training tonight to see how it goes and only then will be able to determine whether it is going to be burned or will continue to use it

More pictures of the sanding and face restoration to come!

Is in the process of being sanded and glued so it is going to look dry, from what i have gathered though it does seem to be a low moisture cleft due to its size and weight

That's a refund/replacement job surely?

Personally i would have left it well alone and sent it back to the retailer / manufacture for a refund, replacement or at least an explanation as, think it's fair to say, it shouldn't have broken like that, this early in it's lifespan.

OK all, few questions have been raised so thought i would answer.
Sorry for delay, time-zones and work are wonderful things :)

SO this bat has had little use only bout 125 runs and has mainly been used as a net bat but has been used quite heavily (probably upwards of 30 net sessions)

I spoke with James and i thought i would at least have a crack at repairing it ( pun intended)
The repair job is a success to a degree in saying that the cracks have been closed.
Unfortunately it has lost most of its ping.

Without being able to prove this to James and not wanting to send it back to him at my cost, a choice was given by James to saw the bat as in James' words, "If it is truly gone you wont have a issue of cutting it up and burning it"

I have decided to cut it up (which i will provide photos shortly :) )
it was a belter but now has lost all of its ping,

A video will be shown later of the bat being cut up and burned as it becomes night time over here

AS i have now cut it up, James will be replacing the bat which i am sure will live up to this bats quality

seeing as you have cut it up, it would be good to do a few shots of the inside of the bat so members can see the depth of oil penetration as well as see where the bat has been pressed.. if you get a chance please.

I think it would also be helpful to see how dry the cleft was on the inside.

no worries buzz will upload shortly.

From looking at them the penetration is minimal, you cant even tell where it was oiled even with 2 coats. a
The cleft is very dry, i dont know what the standard moisture would be in a bat but this looks very dry

inside of the bat pics,

rather dry as one could see, crack is part of the initial break that wasn't sealed as it could not be seen until now

very dry willow even with 2 oils. cant even see the penetration
