Hi all

It's that time of year again where captains are being elected.

Last season I played 2nds most of the year, with a turn out for the 1sts and a handful for the 3rds
The 3rd XI captaincy is going to be vacant next season, and I am seriously considering trying to stand.
I need to find 3 nominees who played 3rd XI last season, and "apply" by the 28th November.

Do I go for it and sacrifice my chances of playing at a higher lever, or do I let some other mug take the job lol

How old are you mate?

There is two trains of thought, push yourself to play as higher standard as you can or do what makes you happy as at the end of the day most of us play 'village cricket' - personally I'd advise the latter.

I would personally go for the captaincy unless I get a fixed slot in the first team.

Personally my opinion is that you should always push yourself yo play at the highest standard you can

I feel that captaincy is an under-appreciated and thankless position. I'd take a fixed spot in (edited - thanks, auto-correct, you truly make my life easy!) the batting order over captaincy any day.

In answer to some of the questions

I'm 20 so would be fairly young to take the captaincy.

As for what would make me happier - a constant place where I know my role in the side, I don't care which side, I just like to know what my job will be!

Would I enjoy it? I had a Weston doing the midweek side last year and was unceremoniously replaced as Sunday captain so on past experiences not really, but who knows?

I was in a similar situation last year (although it was 4th and 5th Xi) and it was an absolute nightmare. I had a few things to deal with like one member being a complete and utter prat but it was hard work. Are they the bottom sides in your club? If so prepared to be crapped on from above on a regular basis and be scrapping around for players on a Friday night and Saturday morning!

It takes up a lot of time mate, worth considering if you can spare that time fom work or family life. If you can and are confident you can make a good stab at it then go for it. Most clubs are struggling for people to take on more responsibility. It's not suited to a lot of people (me being one) but you only truly know that by giving it a try

We have 6 sides so well and truly middle of the road!
The 5th XI captaincy is also vacant which would be an easier side expectation wise, but availability would be the issue!

What I wouldn't like to do though would be take players on a Saturday morning, due to the knock on effete on all 6 sides (with the inevitable drop outs every week its accepted it will happen though).

My experience of the midweek captaincy was always struggling for players last minute so I'm no stranger to that problem!

what's the junior section like? we filled spots in 4s and 5ths with talented young uns.  the progress the 13/ 14 year olds made was staggering in a season

5th & 6th team had a lot of the youngsters, with the 3rd XI keeper being a 13 year old!

So what I can make out of the situation (reading all your comments) that you are interested in Captaincy, go for it. Every task big or small comes with lot of challenges and gives you a lot of benefits. You'll get more or less a fixed place in a side which is good, you'll gain experience as a captain, which is good, you can run a show on ground in the way you'd like which often isn't the case, you can gain experience dealing with people on & off field. It comes with fair set of challenges with biggest of them getting 11 players on the field, others are arranging a lot of on/off field activities. You are young and enthusiastic, I would say go for it and deal with the challenges.

Doesn't seem like a Choice to me, on those hand you can play at this mythical 'higher' level but not get value for your time,effort or money.. Or you can play where you'll get the most enjoyment, most for your time, money and effort..ll seems a done deal to me. Leave those wanting to bat at 7/8/9/10/11 and watch the top order also bowl to it and get yourself a better game.m
