Eye injury - had to give up the game
« on: May 22, 2015, 02:24:56 AM »

Whilst batting this week I got struck in the eye from a bouncer from a guy who chucked the ball. Had made a number of complaints to the umps but nothing was done.

The ball took a top edge and hit me flush in the eye. I've never worn a helmet and it was probably just a matter of time before something like this was going to happen: the irony is that I've tried batting with a helmet and various ones but always found I struggle seeing out of it.

Pretty much lost most vision in one of my eyes and been told that the likelihood is I'll never play again. Could have been a lot worse as I lost consciousness.

Pretty sorry story all round

Oh man, I'm sorry to hear! :( I guess it's different for those of us who took up the game later, so were forced to wear lids, so it feels unnatural not to wear one while batting. Hope your eye heals up fine, and you can recover well from this injury!

Sorry to hear that @csnew . It's very unfortunate and a good reminder to all about the benefits of a helmet. Having said that, I used to play against a team where one of the opening batsmen only had one functioning eye, having lost his sight in the other in a motorbike accident. He was still perfectly capable of scoring fifty, so as is always the case, never give in, never surrender. Your cricket career isn't necessarily over.

Sorry to hear that, that's terrible news. I actually top edged a shot last Saturday that hit me on the forehead. Luckily the peak of my cap took some impact and I'm just left with a bruise and lump. Fingers crossed for you

Ah really feel for you
I've also never worn a helmet, but I must admit, after tragic events this year, I've thought long and hard about it

As far as your vision is concerned, I'm sure it's early days yet,,,
Ive battled with my sight since I was 16, due to an eye disease which meant I was blind for a while,(I did actually play a couple of games!) so I can understand your fears.
Due to the nature of my condition, my eyes have changed as regards to actual vision, which has meant changes to my batting stance etc.
What I'm trying to say is, where there's a will,there's a way

Sorry to read this but I think the keywords are the likelihood is  that you will never play again which reads that you don't yet know also hope you are okay.

Keep persevering mate....remember, even with one eye you've got more chance of getting in the England team than KP!!!  :D
